Richard, Karen, Herb Alpert
Pictured above at the reception for the release of MIA
album. A & M
Records in Hollywood are celebrating their top drawer artists
eleventh USA album, and twelfth year with the label. A party
of two hundred guests will be hosted by Herb Alpert to
honor Richard and Karen.
Karen and Richard's "comeback" album, Made In
America was released this year.
Even in the physical state Karen seemed to be in, she still kept
up a grueling scheduled which eventually wore her down.
The Carpenters started a promotion tour for their new album
which started in Europe and ended in Brazil November 05,
1981.

October
25 They
went to dinner with Peter and Babs Knight.
Karen ate a gourmet meal with enthusiasm. Babs recalls "and
she did not disappear after the meal to do what some anorexic's
do." Nor did she appear to be quite so thin
as the Knights remembered her previously with some
concern.

time for fans. |

November 09, 1981: Karen,
her husband Tom Burris, and family went to dinner at
one of their favorite restaurants. After dinner
they returned home and soon after, Tom Burris said to
Karen's parents,
"You can keep her". |
Late 1981: Richard
stated in the November issue of People Magazine that "she
reached the stage where she came to me and said, "Richard,
I realize I'm sick and I need help". Karen
started to see Dr. Levenkron in
New York City. By this time she was in deep trouble.
She was up to 80-90 Dulcolax laxatives a day and had started
thyroid medication at least three months prior. This was
to speed up her metabolism to burn more calories. Karen's
physical condition was critical. Dr.
Levenkron describes her as "77 pounds of dehydrated
skeleton."
