I’ve been a fan since summer of 1973 when I was 9 (which makes me 43) and heard Yesterday Once More on the radio every day during summer art classes. Karen became “my” singer. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert when they came to my town in the fall of 1974. They picked some other school to sing “Sing” with them…oh, I was outraged about that for a good long time. Those other kids couldn't possibly have been as big of fans as I was. LOL.
I begged my parents to let me have drum lessons. They bought me a clarinet.
My old albums all were lost in a basement flood while they were packed up during a move several years ago. It was hard to find replacements for most of them and I gave up trying after awhile. Two days ago I went out and bought the Carpenters Gold CD.
I’m married, work as a retail media consultant, and have 2 kids who are now discovering the Carpenters sound. My daughter, who is 9, likes all the cute, upbeat songs like Sing (which I used to sing as a lullaby when the kids were small) and Please Mr. Postman. My son, who plays electric guitar and has an Ozzie Osborn ringtone on his phone, says that while the Carpenters are not really his style, he LOVES the guitar solo on Goodbye to Love. He plays it over and over so he can learn it, and wants to know what Tony Peluso is doing now. He recognized right off how incredible it was for Karen to have played drums while singing. So his true appreciation will come, I have no doubt.
Now that I’m reliving all these songs, I find I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard a lot of them. If there isn’t already a thread dedicated to that topic, let’s start one.
I look forward to “meeting” everyone here!
