Carl
Hello. Please visit this web: www.drummerworld.com and tell me why is not Karen listed under the ladies section...

This site is a serious place to find a repository of talents. I think Karen was very serious about her drumming, and as a precedent for female drummers, she deserves to be included.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=6dJUnh6N8-U

Please, do a search for "Karen Carpenter drums" on youtube or google video and check out the "Dancin' in the Streets" clip

In Drummerworld, listed under female drummers is Meg White!!! And Karen Carpenter is not??? Why?

The founder of Drummerworld says:

"Meg White is a very limited drummer - i know - and she knows too. But,

For KC i had 450 votes to include
For Meg i had 58900 votes to include..."

read the post #27: http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33748

We can do something... what do you think?

Thanks so much for sharing that thread. It's terrific to see so many great responses to Karen and her drumming and people taking her serious. It's a shame how what happened to her and how they were portrayed throughout their career gets in the way of recognizing their true talents.

It's a shame Karen isn't listed and Meg White is. What voting are they referring to? I'm sure if they ran a vote again, we could drum up some votes wink.gif

May I ask you something Carl? Was that you that wrote that post about Karen on drummerworld? I think it was well thought out, and, well said. She was not just a singer as everybody that listened to her thinks. She did drum, but, you may or may not know this: She only did the drumming out on the road, and, they always had someone in the studio to do her drumming for her.

What I think we need to do is have a few threads on Karen's drumming made up, and, then put a link to this site, and, all its topics of Karen's drumming on the drummerworld site, so they can look at them, and, that should make these people open their eyes about this. What do you think? And, dom a search about Karen's drumming before you put a topic up about it. There should be plenty for you to read before you start one of your own. And, if there was something that uoi feel was left out, please feel free to make a topic about it. Hope this helps you in your quest to get Karen on the "ladies" list of drummers on drummerworld site.

RC Fan #1: I apologize for starting this topic before doing a search here about karen in drummerworld. So i think that this was discussed before. I only wanted to say that we might do something in the matter... the votation...
Pookeysmom
It's okay to post about it again...that happens often. I wonder if Karen's ABILITIES as a drummer, rather than votes for popularity, might not be more viable to the founder of Drummerworld, to include her at least on their list of female drummers?

Just a thought.

Carl, thank you for posting the link to the drummerworld forum. It's very nice to know that Karen's thread got lots of responses.

I am one of old LeadSister members, but I cannot recall if we have talked about Karen in drummerworld.
I might visit Jim Gordon page on the site and mention it, and other members may have posted the links or photos in drummerworld.

I just read some of posts about Karen in drummerworld. I love they talked about Karen's techinique on "Music Music Music" Special at Drum Technique section, posted the link to Modern Drummer article about Karen on LeadSister main page and mentioned Buddy Rich's comment about Karen!

The founder of drummerworld may not be interested in female drummer. I haven't seen his post in female drummers thread.
Some quotes from the female drummers thread in drummerworld.

The first female drummer that I remember going, "OMG! She's really, really good for a girl", was Karen Carpenter, back in the seventies! Even Buddy Rich thought she was amazing.

She's me ALL-TIME favorite female drummer, and there's a bunch of her drum-clips on YouTube, that'll knock your socks off...

Play On! ;-)

Meg White is shocking. When she hits the kcik twice she has to hit with her hand twice because she has no cowardnation........Ive seen it live (unfortunatley) I hate bagging out drummers and im not one to but the worst professional drummer on earth would be Meg White

I think Jayne(whsoxfan) posted, several years ago, that Karen beat out John Bonham as #1 drummer in 1972 or 1973.
Last autumn Pamela(LeadSister who owned this forum) mentioned John Bonham in the Playboy music poll. Karen beat out John Bonham in 1975?

I think I read that Karen was #5 drummer on Playboy poll 1979 in fan club newsletter.

Even if Dana(currently, Richard Carpenter Fan1) is a new fan and hasn't read credits about drums on Carpenters CD's, Dana could have checked the official site and should have read credits about drums, I think. Or I am not good at English so I don't understand Dana's words.

Hal Blaine played the drums on "Close To You". First Karen's drum version and not Ricarhd's piano version have not been surfaced yet, though they recorded the versions.

Karen played the drums on world wide hits, "Yesterday Once More" and "Please Mr. Postman"!!

Songs on studio albums, Karen played the drums on;
Herb Alpert's notes at Carpenters first album "Offering";
QUOTE
The vocal sound is a product of Richard and Karen Carpenter. In addition to the vocals Karen (age 19) plays drums on all the selections and on two of the offerings she plays electric bass...

( Feb mag, currently; http://www.rittor-music.co.jp/hp/dm/

book "Drummer" published, March 2007

Both magazine Feb. and the book have Karen's biography and article about Karen's drumming style. The magazine has interviews with Richard and Joe Osborn about Karen's drums.
The book also has analysis on Karen's drums about earlier songs on "from the top"or "Offering" to live performing. The writer thinks that Karen did spread single head toms.

I'd love to read American drums magazine article which futured Karen!! Does any music magazine interview Joe Osborn about Karen's drumming?

Here is what I found out on wiki[pedia. So, if there is anything to add to this please go ahead, and, do so:

Karen's drumming was praised by fellow drummers Hal Blaine, Cubby O'Brien, Buddy Rich and "Modern Drummer" magazine. [5] Many people are unaware that Karen had an impeccable ability to play the drums, in part because the public wanted a singing Karen Carpenter, rather than a drumming Karen Carpenter. However, according to Richard Carpenter in an interview, Karen always considered herself as a "drummer who sang."

Carpenter first started playing the drums in 1964, shortly after moving to Downey, California. She was always enthusiastic about the drums, and taught herself how to play complicated drum lines with "exotic time signatures" (quoting Richard Carpenter from the "Close to You" documentary). Songs that effectively demonstrate her drumming abilities include "Caravan" and "Iced Tea," from 1965 and 1966, respectively.

After the release of "Now & Then" in 1973, the albums tended to have Karen singing more and drumming less. By 1981, Karen played on none of the songs, with drummers Hal Blaine and Ron Tutt as substitutes.

I forgot posting this;
'Singing Drummers' on BBC site
QUOTE
Walking And Chewing Gum At the Same Time...
Five drummers who got sick of looking at the lead singer's wiggling bum and decided that they could sing!

1. PHIL COLLINS: 'GENESIS' ....

2. DON HENLEY: 'THE EAGLES' ....

3. RINGO STARR ....

4. KAREN CARPENTER: 'THE CARPENTERS'
Karen Carpenter, one of the most expressive pop vocalists of all time, began
her musical career as a drummer. She fell into music by accident, choosing
to join the school band as a means of getting out of gym class, and then
picking the drums because they seemed the softest option. She never looked
back: "luckily, drumming came naturally, I started right off playin', and
time signatures came naturally... I don't know how, I mean, it felt so
comfortable when I picked up a pair of sticks!." Her brother, who formed the
other half of The Carpenters, agreed: "boy, could she play 'em!" Richard and
Karen were the best selling American artists of the '70s and she came under
a lot of pressure to get out from behind the drum kit. Eventually she
compromised - she drummed for the up-tempo numbers and came to the front for
the ballads. The final word goes to drumming legend Buddy Rich, who once
told Karen: "do you know that you’re one of my favourite drummers?" High
praise indeed!
