When I found it in youtube, I saw less than a half of the video and I stopped it. It doesn't seems to me agreeable that someone had done something like that. I find very very sad to know how it would be to walk in that kitchen and to find her dead in the floor. Maybe the video is not about this (I have not seen it in complete form, I just couldn't) but, I had the feeling that it is.
I think we don't need to see a video to know how terribly it was... the Karen's leave.

It's horrible

Personally, I don't think Haynes' film was that 'horrible'. It might have taken some factual liberties, and certainly portrayed some people in a harsher light than they deserved, but it was made with sincerity with the purpose of putting a message out there about anorexia nervosa.

Anyway, I am just amazed this youtube user called whatever this mesh of stuff was an 'orginal film'. Using nearly 2 minutes of another movie then adding parts of a couple of music videos with some weird desert scenes along with several seconds of home movies does not an original film make... that was just weird.

When I first saw the Todd Haynes barbie doll movie, I hated it because it seemed so "ugly" in the way it portrayed the Carpenter family. But the more times I watch it, I realize what a masterpiece it is. Haynes really nailed it when it comes to the inner workings of Karen and her family. Does anyone know what the spanking is supposed to mean? Is it Karen's dad spanking her? That scene is so short it's barely there and you have to wonder if you saw what you thought you saw.

The spanking is more of an illustration of the fact that Karen had no control, and was kind of treated like a child. For example...Dan O'Neill, husband of Cherry Boone, Pat Boone's daughter and eldest sis of Debby Boone...she battled anorexia (Cherry) and because she was hiding laxatives and he caught her in the act, he pulled her across the knee and spanked her...she was like 26 or something and got spanked by her husband.

So maybe, it was to show that Karen would act like a child, she would be treated like a child...in context with the film and how they percieved everything...

Thanks for shedding an hypothetical light on this, I was not sure about the meaning of those spanking scenes either and I think you've got a point on your opinion.

I've wondered about that scene myself. Thanks for your insight on it. Does make sense.
