I was looking around drummer websites to listen up to some more jazz to hopefully get a better handle on it and came across Hal Blaine info. In the listing for "The No.1 Hits Hal Blaine plays drums"... they have down Close To You-The Carpenters. He didnt play that. That was Karen. Which song or songs did he do studio work on? I can't remember off hand. But it certainly wasnt Close To You.
Top of the World is also listed I realized.

Hal Blaine did played drums on "Close to you" sessions. If you look to the credits in the booklet of "Interpretations" album you'll find out, besides I'm remembering The "E! True Hollywood Story" show where he shared some memories about that experience. Also Chuck Findley played the trumpet as a guest musician in that sessions.
There are two recording sessions of "Top of the world" The 1972 version featured in "A song for you" album and the 1973 version who was released as a single in that year. Hal played the drums on both sessions, but the 1972 was produced by Jack Daugherty and the 1973 by Richard and Karen.

Did he play a certain version of CTY? I just remember seeing footage of Karen playing the drums in the stupid for CTY and another song. Maybe you've seen it. I just cant imagine a need for a studio drummer for that song. It's a fairly simple song to play.
Maybe there's a difference in studio drummers and live drummers or there wouldnt be the distinction between the two.

I really don't know why they brought Hal Blaine, maybe because the song was recorded as a request of Herb Alpert (in that moment, he tought that the song was perfect for Karen & Richard and he was right) and he gave Richard free way in the arragement and because of that he might used all the studio musicians of A&M , well, I really don't know, I'm just guessing

As I recall from Hal Blaine's Drumming with Richard at CPAC Concert , Richard Wanted More Strength in the Studio Drumming Sesssions and Karen to Continue with Lead Vocals and Live Drums Performances !
As Karen was such a Great Drummer -Any Early Solo / Trio , Spectrum and Carpenters Recordings are Always Special.....Would be Great to hear more Karen Drum Work
