Karen Carpenter Story

Does anyone know why Richard didn't release a soundtrack album for the TV movie? I know that Lovelines came out near the time......but with all of the collections that Richard has released ( and made a bunch of $ on), it looks like he would have thought ahead and released a soundtrack within a few months of the movie...
any thoughts????

My guess would be that it was a TV movie, and generally they don't make soundtracks for those.

I know he wasn't happy after it was done and that usually not for TV movies......but it would have sold MANY copies. Didn't sales on the Carpenters records increase by something like 400% after the TV movie?

Hey everyone! I'm on break from school all next week! I'm tired right now and getting ready for bed, but thought I'd just check in quick and see what's been going on.
I do remember reading somewhere about the album sales going way up right after the movie aired for the first time. As for a soundtrack, who knows why Richard didn't release one. He doesn't seen too interested in throwing much of the Carpenters our way. Were movie soundtracks even being made back then? I don't kow --- they probably were but I just wasn't aware of them then. Even now, are soundtracks released for made for TV movies? Or are they just for big screen flicks?

That's what I thought too! But it surely would be nice to have such a release, specially with the then unreleased songs featured in the movie! Or maybe Richard could feel it was unnecessary to have any collection, soundtrack or not, featuring the same two songs he was going to include in Lovelines that same year.

I wanna know that too... as for soundtrack albuns being made, yes, you simply forgot Grease, right?? According to a Madonna biography I have read, the real business for soundtrack albuns started with the release of Saturday night fever soundtrack.

Soundtrack albums were big long before Sat. Night Fever........broadway musicals and movie musicals were some of the biggest selling.....like The Sound of Music, West Side Story......and even movie soundtracks......early 70s....American Grafitti........
probably back then not made for TV movies....now they have soundtracks for tv shows.......
It would have been pretty cool though......I've made my own anyway.......

Maybe the book was talking about soundtracks to movies that were not musicals themselves, I don't know.

I agree. My mom has a soundtrack album from Camelot with Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet from 1960. So, yeah, soundtracks have been around a long time.

Hi Jonathan,
Karen Carpenter Soundtrack was discussed during 1988, just after TV Film production was completed....probably due to combination of A&M Execs plans plus Richard being very busy on production projects, KC Film score, Concerts plus work commencing on eventual "Lovelines" release led to Soundtrack being mothballed or put to one side .....
Had this Soundtrack project been released ....Richard could have remixed / remastered many of KC Story Carpenters songs plus included both Magic Lamp 1966 Single songs : Looking For Love & I'll Be Yours & probably released Slowdance as official Single (Nov / Dec 1988) ....just before transmission of KC Story ( 1-1-1989) ....sure Carpenters fans would have been delighted ....
Richard could have retained Where Do I Go From Here & You're The One for eventual Lovelines Album release .....
How much success would Soundtrack have achieved .....plenty in USA ....with promotion plus huge TV ratings success of KC Story ....at least Top 20 Album ....first Top 40 since Voice Of The Heart ( Cashbox as I recall) & more if enough new listeners / original fans had been enthused by release .....& Sountrack could have been released Worldwide....as TV Film due to be shown in other Countries/ Markets ....
Understand Lovelines was delayed for release as with later As Time Goes By project ....& had Lovelines been issued early ....sure this album would have charted & achieved more awarenesss & success as lost in A&M sale to Polygram ( late 1989) ...!!
There are many other planned or potential Carpenters projects / releases that met the same fate as this possible Soundtrack .....fascinating what ifs .....for Carpenters releases & history .....
Hope this helps .....

Is there any website telling the whole list of songs featured in the movie?
