35 Year Fan

Hi, I’m Summer. I read about the Newville house a few weeks ago (oh, how that hurts), followed a few links and discovered this site. I’m amazed and thrilled to find such a loyal fanbase…for years I have thought I was the only Carpenters fan left in the world. I’m also now addicted to youtube because of all the Carpenters videos people have shared there!
I’ve been a fan since summer of 1973 when I was 9 (which makes me 43) and heard Yesterday Once More on the radio every day during summer art classes. Karen became “my” singer. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert when they came to my town in the fall of 1974. They picked some other school to sing “Sing” with them…oh, I was outraged about that for a good long time. Those other kids couldn't possibly have been as big of fans as I was. LOL.
I begged my parents to let me have drum lessons. They bought me a clarinet.
My old albums all were lost in a basement flood while they were packed up during a move several years ago. It was hard to find replacements for most of them and I gave up trying after awhile. Two days ago I went out and bought the Carpenters Gold CD.
I’m married, work as a retail media consultant, and have 2 kids who are now discovering the Carpenters sound. My daughter, who is 9, likes all the cute, upbeat songs like Sing (which I used to sing as a lullaby when the kids were small) and Please Mr. Postman. My son, who plays electric guitar and has an Ozzie Osborn ringtone on his phone, says that while the Carpenters are not really his style, he LOVES the guitar solo on Goodbye to Love. He plays it over and over so he can learn it, and wants to know what Tony Peluso is doing now. He recognized right off how incredible it was for Karen to have played drums while singing. So his true appreciation will come, I have no doubt.
Now that I’m reliving all these songs, I find I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard a lot of them. If there isn’t already a thread dedicated to that topic, let’s start one.
I look forward to “meeting” everyone here!

Hi Summer
I'm Jayne from Illinois and I'm a longtime fan too! I was 11 in the 1971 when I first heard "Close to You"... since then I've been hooked! Your introduction was great! Glad you rediscovered the Carpenters... welcome to the forum - it's good to have you here.

Gosh, I feel like I've come home...to people who "know". You know? And I am constantly excited by every new fact I find, when I thought I knew everything about the Carpenters all along.
Panda, I'll see if I can get to your radio show on Sunday! I often work weekends but I have this one off, yeah!
Greenie, I'm over the clarinet now. LOL. But how I hated that thing when I had it.
(No offense to any clarinet players here. It's a beautiful instrument when played well; however even after two years I never really got past the "dying goose" stage. I guess listening to THAT would've paid my parents back!)
Bruce, thanks for the welcome!
Jayne, nice to meet you!
Robin, I have friends and one cousin in New Jersey. I was there a few summers ago for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at how green and hilly your state is. The places we drove through were beautiful.
Well, I've let the laundry go this week, and the catbox, and the vacuuming...I am spending too much "happy time" here!

Yes, Summer New Jersey is a very pretty state. Unfortunately, when people think of New Jersey the see Newark Airport, and the footage from The Sorprano's and think this is what New Jersey looks like. This is so far from the truth. Go either north or South of Newark Airport and the scenery is is quit beautiful. If you love the ocean, there's no place like the Jersey Shore. I live in the northwestern part of the state and let me tell you by this time of the year I have had it with the SNOW!!!
Again, enjoy the forum, there's so much to learn.

Hi,
Welcome to Leadsister. I'm Cheryl, 49...currently in Charleston, SC. Also a long-time fan.
I also used to think I was the last Carpenters fan in the world until I started investigating online sites. There's so much more to learn and discover now. Here's another good site.
LINK
You'll be on a NOKS(nuts over Karen Syndrome) for quite awhile, I can tell you that much.
Hope we here more from you.

Hi RC's girl! I always loved Karen's voice but fell in love with Richards when he did O Come O Come Emmanuel on Christmas Portrait. I played that bit over and over, which meant, because it was vinyl at the time, that I had to stand there while I did it.
Lead Sister, WOW, what a site! Thank you SO MUCH for doing this!
And I love the Animal clip. He was/is always my favorite Muppet because of the drums! I had a couple of Animal tshirts back in the day and an Animal coffee mug and a stuffed Animal. (My parents didn't see me wearing Muppets with clarinets, now, did they??)
RobinB, I'm tired of snow too...we get lake effect snow which can just be insane. CAn't plant anything til May and we've been known to get frost or flurries into the first week of May, even. Ugh.
Cheryl, what did you DO to me by giving me that link to Rode Ode?? OMG, I was up waaaay too late last night playing over there. Thanks...I..think...
My husband, who is into all things classic, says thanks, too! WE laughed out butts off (well, guess mine's still there, rats) at the Carol Burnett clips. And yes, I'm certifiably NOKS!!
But what is NODS and NOBS??
I'm about to drive a couple hours out of town for a conference...I'm going to listen to my GOLD cd's all the way! Yeah!
Oh, and If there is a thread where people have posted where they were when they heard "that song" for the first time, can someone direct me there? I haven't looked everywhere yet, but don't want to repeat if there's already one. Otherwise I (or someone) can start one!

That would be nuts about Dave and Barry (Manilow) respectively.
You can have "Nuts Over __________ Syndrome" about just anything.
