Hi...my name is Judy and I am from New Hampshire. I am a children's musician and write, perform and record music for kids. You can find out more about that at www.judypancoast.com
I have been a fan of Karen and Richard since I saw them in concert at The Music Hall in Boston in May, 1971. I actually met them backstage at a concert in 1973 in Portland, Maine, and I can tell you about that if you want.
I joined the original fan club in 1971 after receiving a lovely note from Ev. I paid $2 and got a pen, a button, a bumper sticker and all the back issues of the newsletter (there weren't that many at that time). I never paid another cent and got newsletters, etc., up until Karen died.
Karen Carpenter was my idol from the time I was very young. Sometimes I still can't believe that she is gone. She inspired me in my career choice and you could say that she influenced my eldest daughter's career choice (music business student at NYU) through me. My girls, ages 14 and 18, recognize her voice from the first note.
It frustrates me that the Carpenters don't seem to have received their due as icons of our generation. I have signed the petition for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I know that if Karen were alive today she and Richard would have taken that spot that Celine Dionne just vacated in Las Vegas and they would still be going strong.
On another note, I just learned about the possible demolition of the Newville house today. I was just in LA last week for the Grammys and am kicking myself that I did not go to Downey to see the house!
Anyhow, I'm glad to be here; thanks for having this great forum for fans old and new.

Hi Judy!
You are a fan from way back, great story! There's a few of us around here that are, ....... "seasoned" ... not that it matters, a fan is a fan.
I look forward to you expanding on your stories, when you have time of course. Take your time and settle in, we're a friendly bunch.
I'm Bruce, 48, from Florida.

Hey Judy (in disguise... with glasses
)
. . Wow, another person who remembers the classic pop-rock era...
Splendid. I'm Dave from SC though I grew up a few towns south of Boston. Your intro. story about seeing and meeting the Carpenters way back when sounds Great.
I first remember hearing the Carpenters in the summer of 1970 while camping at the Saco River Campgrounds on Rt. 302 in No. Conway, NH on AM radio station WBNC. A year or so later I remember really admiring Karen for her music and persona like so many others.
In any event, welcome to the forum as we'd like to hear more from you.

Hi, Judy,
Sound like a similar life as me in the 70's.
I also joined the fan club and got letters until I moved and didn't tell them where.
I also met them backstage in '75....we'd LOVE to hear your experience about that.
WELCOME and glad you found us here....it's a great place.

Hi Judy! I'd love to hear about the backstage meeting with Karen and Richard. I wish I had lived during the times to see their concerts. I'm Leanne, from Canada.
Your music career sounds like a fun, rewarding way to put out music. You have a lovely voice too. I watched that Take Me to Your Reader video, was that a coincidence that the girl's name was "Karen" in that song?

Hello
Judy and welcome to the forum! Thanks for the nice intro
Another lucky person to have seen them live and met them! And yeah, it truly stinks that the music studio is torn down now. Looks like the neighbors aren't too thrilled with it either. They shouldn't have moved there but nothing we can really do about it now I guess.
It's completely wrong that the RRHOF is ignoring them. They were also ignoring Bob Seger and Lynyrd Skynyrd for years but he was finally pushed in there by fans. (My husband runs rockthehall.com which is why I started gocarpenters.com) So hopefully we can start getting some media.
Well, enjoy yourself around the forum! Nice to meet you.

I'm glad someone else noticed it too!!! Seems like people come here and introduce themselves and then we never here from them again! Why is that?

Oh, Hello!
I'm here, too!!
But I know what you mean, I've done the disappearing act on on other message boards myself. One time was a few years ago when we first set up an aquarium. It was really exciting at first to get advice and learn things from the people on the aquarium sites, but pretty soon you know what you're doing, and unless you continually upgrade to bigger and bigger tanks, which we weren't going to do, fish talk is just...well, fish talk.
But THIS...how can anyone leave HERE?? No where else on earth I'd really rather be!
(Edited for typos...it's too early in the morning!)
