Your First Impression?

Pookeysmom's Photo Pookeysmom 04 Oct 2007

What was your first impression when you saw Karen play the drums for the first time? I remember seeing her in concert and I had heard her on the albums, but seeing her play live was such a treat. She totally loved playing...that was obvious from the joy on her face. Some of the front row seats I had were a great view and she teased the audience, never seemed tired of playing drums, and yet...alomst seemed so at home behind them compared to when she stood......even in '75 when she was ill...she was alomst the most alive behind the drums. I was in awe of her, as I started playing(because of her) when I was 14. I listened to her drumming on the albums over and over again...trying to figure out what the heck she was doing in certain parts. Only later in life did I realize she often threw drum rudiments in as she played. Karen was drumming and drumming was Karen. Anyone with that kind of "natural" talent should have played more, but alas...others didn't agree. mad.gif

When she was super-thin, Andrew. She had the "moxy" to lay in to those drums.

I just smile when I see Karen drum, u can really see her passion for it coming through!! I wish I'd been born earlier so I could have seen that passion first hand. I admire her too coz really, female drummers weren't really around back then were they?? She stuck to her guns and just went for it........Karen the drummer rocks!!!

I was just a kid of 10 in 1970, but seeing Karen play drums made me really, really want to play drums. It looked so fun! But my dad said no. ::sigh:: "Girls don't play drums", and we had a piano, for which I had no talent. I bet a lot of girls took up drums after watching her play though.

The first thing I thought was "Wow!" She was so talented and made playing the drums look effortless. I never cared for the drums before that, because they were...you know...boys stuff. But when Karen played them, she just beamed. She made a set of drums look like every female's dream come true. Not long after that I got a pair of chopsticks and was learning all the beats to all the Carpenters songs!

When I first saw her, I was amazed at what a talent she had. I also remember seeing a big smile on her face, which was more powerful than the sound of the drum set itself! She glowed behind that drum set! I wish that she had kept that, but it was also nice to see her in front. I wonder why they just didn't put the drums in front? And how she could drum and sing at the same time is another excitement in itself! What a talent!

The best drummer that ever lived, in my opinion. She's inspired me so much. It's not bad to be the most beautiful woman, have the best personality, be the best drummer, and also be the best vocalist of all-time. wink.gif

One of the first times I remember seeing Karen play drums was on the Morton's Potato Chips commercials on TV. I was in awe of how really cool and pretty she looked and how she was really enjoying and immersed in her music. icon_note.gif

Yeah...another of the most amazing things about her was the EASE in which she played drums AND sang at the same time. That's not always the easiest thing to do, but so natural for Karen!!!!
