Lovelines

Why did this song/album release before Karen's solo album, and then appear on her solo album?

And why on another Carpenters website did it say that their Christmas album (the one released in 1998) that Karen was credited as a producer? That REALLY confuses me!

And about "Voices of the Heart" on the cover why is Karen the only one on there? Did Richard just give it up and say "Well, screw it! She's more popular than me I'll sit this one out."

When was the songs from "Lovelines" recorded? Was this the album that that woman (I forget her name) did such a good job at "ghost vocals"/background vocals?

And I don't know why most of you guys don't like "Made in America"! "I believe you" and "(Want you)Back in my life again" is on there!

And is "Offering" and "Ticket to Ride" the same basic album? Why was it re-released under a different name?

And where is the song "Trying to get that feeling again"? What album did that appear on?

I am too lazy to do all the research! I love you guys cause you usually TRY and answer most of my lazy questions.

I think I heard Karen's Solo album...unless AaronC sent me the wrong things...and I thought "Karen was Vulnerable and Sexy"...it was pretty good. Some of the songs where high sounding. But, Karen had that limitless range that I loved. Amazing.

Well, that's it for me! I am done. *takes a deep breath and relaxes*

Actually, I realized AaronC sent me the "unreleased" songs from that session. I liked the stuff. I thought it was great...that must mean one thing...the album is greater than those songs, right? I'd like to hear stuff from her solo album...maybe I'll just buy it.

I don't get why "Love makin' love to you" wasn't put on the CD! Was it because it sounded too Carpenters like. I have no idea. It had over-dubbing in there didn't it? Oh well...It's my new favourite song.

At the time Lovelines (the album) was released (1989), Karen's solo album was still on the shelf and according to Richard would never be released. It was finally released 7 years later in 1996.

Because the songs with Karen's vocals were recorded in 1978 when all the songs on the Christmas Portrait album were recorded. When Richard released the remaining Christmas songs with Karen's vocals in 1984, he credited her, because she had co-produced the songs with him. The Christmas Collection (1998) was the first time both albums had appeared on CD.

"Voice of the Heart" was the album that was released in 1993, 8 months after Karen died. It was advertised as a "tribute" album for Karen. At the time, it was considered to be the LAST Carpenters album, since Karen had died. The cover photo of Karen had been intended to be the cover of her solo album. But since Richard had no plans to release Karen's solo album, and since Voice Of The Heart was considered to be the last Carpenters album, Richard used the photo of Karen on the cover of what was his tribute to her. Later, he manage to create 2 more albums (Lovelines and As Time Goes By) by finishing and remixing vocals that had been recorded for television specials or were outtakes from other albums.

I don't understand what you mean by a woman doing ghost vocals, unless you're thinking of the O.K. Chorale...

Lovelines - recorded in early 1980 during Karen's solo sessions

Where Do I Go From Here - recorded in 1978, during the Christmas album sessions. There was supposed to have been another pop album released in 1978 as well as the Christmas album. 1978 was the year Richard began feeling his "burn-out." They were trying to record another album, were still doing concert dates, and also recording songs for a Christmas album. In September 1978, Richard announced to the band that he was through with live concerts and they cancelled their engagement at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The pop album was abandoned and the tracks were shelved. Karen and Richard concentrated on finishing the Christmas album. While working on the Christmas album, Richard was so burned out, he let Peter Knight do most of the arrangements.

The Uninvited Guest - recorded in 1980 for the Made In America album, but left off due to lack of space

If We Try - recorded by Karen during her solo sessions (1979-80)

When I Fall In Love - recorded in 1978 for the Space Encounters special, but not used

Kiss Me The Way You Did Last Night - recorded in 1980 during the Made In America sessions

Remember When Loving Took All Night - from Karen's solo sessions.
Written by John Farrar who wrote many of Olivia Newton-John's songs

You're The One - recorded in 1977 for the PASSAGE album. Due to lack of space, there was a choice between including You're The One or I Just Fall In Love Again on the PASSAGE album. Richard says it was decided by the flip of a coin.

Honolulu City Lights - recorded in 1978 during the Christmas album sessions

Slow Dance - recorded in 1978 during the Christmas album sessions

If I Had You - from Karen's solo album sessions

Little Girl Blue - recorded in 1978 for the Space Encounters special.

Most older Carpenter fans who grew up with the earlier albums, prefer everything from Ticket to Ride up through the Horizon album. Most younger Carpenter fans prefer A Kind of Hush and Made In America.

QUOTE

Offering and Ticket to Ride are the exact same album. Nothing is different except for the cover and the title change. When Offering was released, it did not sell very well. Ticket to Ride was only a moderate success. After the successes of Close to You and We've Only Just Begun, the remaining Offering albums in stock were destroyed. The album was repackaged under the name Ticket To Ride (because of the only single released from Offering) and given a new (and better-looking) cover.

QUOTE

Trying To Get The Feeling Again was actually a work-lead recorded in 1974-75 for the Horizon album. It was not completed because Richard felt the album contained enough ballads. As the years went by, the track was lost. While working on songs for the Japanese karaoke album, Richard found Trying To Get The Feeling Again on the tape that contained Only Yesterday. When he released the album Interpretations in 1994 to commemorate the Carpenters 25th anniversary, he decided to complete the song, using Karen's work lead. Trying To Get The Feeling Again appeared on Interpretations twenty years after Karen sang it during the Horizon sessions.

The lady in question is Siedah Garrett, who guested on a session with Richard to add the backing vocals on 'Kiss Me The Way You Did Last Night'. She also recorded the vocals on the Michael Jackson hit 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You'.

Thanks Ned and Steven you've been a great help! bowdown.gif

Sometimes I just have these little...I mean big bursts of questions! Sorry about that I go alittle crazy sometimes. But, that's why I am here to get info from other crazy Carpenters fans and work out these problems of mine. laugh.gif

I know you guys don't judge you just answer and be nice. On any other forum I'd have been shot down and told that I was a moron.

Thanks guys! cry.gif you always know how to make a young Carpenters fan feel loved. lovecarpenters.gif

Ned, I am not sure but I think you messed up you said "Voice of the Heart" was the album that was released in 1993, 8 months after Karen died."....NED THAT MAKES NO SENSE. I AM ALREADY CONFUSED AS IT IS! laugh.gif

"Most younger Carpenter fans prefer A Kind of Hush and Made In America."

That's really interesting Ned! I found Karen's solo album outtakes and Carpenters "newer stuff" sounds more 80s disco-90s pop...like it sounds so modern to me. But, maybe I am stuck in the 90s! I REALLY thought those "outtakes" sounded VERY 90s...I don't know why but they did to me! I loved those outtakes I don't know why Richard doesn't just release them as a CD "Karen: solo album volume 2"! Why not I say? Why not?

Karen died February 4, 1983. Just months after she died, Richard went back into the studio (I think it was in April) and began working on the songs that appeared on Voice of the Heart. Voice of the Heart was released in October 1983, eight months after Karen's death.

VOICE OF THE HEART

Now - recorded in California in April 1982, while Karen took a two-week break from her therapy in New York. "Now" turned out to be the last song Karen ever recorded.

Sailing On The Tide - composed in 1975 by Tony Peluso and John Bettis along with "Happy" as Richard wanted more original material for Horizon. However, Sailing wasn't recorded until 1977, during the PASSAGE sessions

You're Enough - recorded at the same session as "Now," April 1982.

Make Believe It's Your First Time - Richard heard Karen's version from her solo sessions, liked the song, and decided to record it in 1980, during the Made In America sessions. He contacted the writers of the song and asked them to compose a bridge ("the door is closed, it's you and me...") for the song. That's why Karen's solo version doesn't include that verse, because it wasn't written for the song until 1981, at Richard's request. The song is a work lead.

Two Lives - work lead recorded in 1980 during the Made In America sessions

At The End of A Song - Though some sources say this was recorded in 1980 during the Made In America sessions, Richard has been quoted as saying it was recorded in April 1982.

Ordinary Fool - recorded in 1976 during the Kind of Hush sessions.

Prime Time Love - recorded in 1980 for Made In America

Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore - In one of the newsletters, Rosina says this was recorded during the Made In America sessions, but Richard has been quoted as saying it was recorded in April 1982. Six songs were recorded during those two weeks in 1982. Out of those six, we know that Now and You're Enough were definitely recorded then. At the End of the Song and You're Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore, possibly. The other two, no one knows except Richard...

Look To Your Dreams - composed in 1974, at Karen's request. She asked Richard and John Bettis to write a song for her that had a "Broadway" feel. The song was recorded in 1978 during the Christmas album session. Peter Knight arranged the song, as well as most of the Christmas song, hence, the "big production" sound. It was considered for release on the Made In Amerca album, but not included on Made in America because it had more the feel of an "old standard" than a contemporary pop song. Instead, the decision was made to use Because We Are In Love.

Also, check out this interview with Richard on Good Morning, America on November 2, 1983, to commemorate the release of Voice Of The Heart:

You mentioned earlier about that picture Richard used for "Voices of the Heart" so when were those pictures taken for her solo album?

Also, when did Karen record her solo album and Outtakes?

Speaking of Outtakes...doesn't it sound like Karen is having an orgasm at 1:56 in "Love Making Love to You"?

Karen recorded her album during the summer and fall of 1979 and the early part of 1980. I think the photos were taken in late 1979 or early 1980.

As for what you're hearing on Love Making Love To You, I don't hear anything unusual...

It's not enjoyable! It's lonely! I am trying to stay abstinent through High School! College will be sooo fun! But, I am trying to enjoy my youth. But, I am such a wuss. I don't do drug...I don't drink. I hardly get out of my house. So, it's hard to enjoy my life when I am not experiencing anything....you know? I am not a party person. I hate big crowds! I just don't fit in very well. I try and stay in small groups. One on one conversations are good for me, the best in fact. So, ya. I'll try and enjoy it Ned for you and all the members on here who wish they were 16 again. Mostly I'll do it for me.
