Richard Taking The Music Seriously

whoserman's Photo whoserman 24 Sep 2007

Here's one for you guys to think over. Obviously Karen and Rich both took their music very seriously, and demanded perfection in everything they did. I think you could probably make the argument that although they were both serious, Karen was the fun-lover who'd be more willing to have a little fun with a song.

Now here's my question to you. I'm listening to the Oldies Medley on the Live in Japan album. Karen played all her songs straight, with nothing too silly. When it came Richard's turn to sing "Daddy's Home," he sang it in a nasal twangy voice. What do you think possessed him to do that?

Discuss.

Hmm... I dunno, but the first time I heard that recording on Live in Japan, I cracked up! It was a little... caricaturey (congrats to me, I made a brand new word!).

Gotta say, though - Karen certainly did ham it up for "Leader of the Pack" during the 1974 Budokan concert... and later during her "Grease" send-up. She certainly knew how to cut loose when she felt it was appropriate!

I Think Richard's vocals are always great. But I agree that "Daddy's Home" isn't good for his vocals !

I always though he was doing a "tongue-in-cheek" imitation of the original recording. Is that how the person sounded that did the original??
Karen DID cut-up during live concerts when she sang "Johnny Angel"(she rolled her eyes and did melodramatic gestures) and a few of the others, too.She really had fun with them!!! laugh.gif
