Readers Digest Music

Is a love song's Photo Is a love song 17 Sep 2007

We all know that "Love is Surrender" faded into "Maybe it's You" that was a cool thing and it made sense.

BUT, on the Readers Digest Music: Carpenters Edition there was a strange fade from "(Want you) Back in my Life Again" into "Ticket to Ride". They used Chimes to get from (Want you) to Ride. I am wondering, don't you think it's weird that they'd do this? And on the "Made in America" CD was their Chimes after (Want you)? I don't have the album that's why I am asking. Those songs were quite a few years apart...why bunch them together?

I have just made a video that proves my point...but it' not completely uploaded yet. I'll post a link when it's finished. I am sure all of you are like "HUH?"...don't worry once the video is up and running it'll all make sense.

Keep in mind. I did not add this fade...it was already there on the RD:CE CD. Why would I waste my time asking you guys about something I did.

Those of you who have RD:CE CD know what I mean. But I am sure most of you are still like "HUH?". The video/music will make it ALL make sense. Then hopefully I'll get an answer to my questions.

Yes, I could have waited until I had the video ready and posted it here...but I wanted to start this thread before I forgot about it. I have been wondering this for a while...and like they say, "there's no time like the present!"

So I decided to ask you NOW.

Anyway...just wait till the videos ready...It'll be ready by tomorrow maybe...or in a couple hours.

Yes, the chimes are on the album as well... For years, I never could figure out what the sound was, and finally read somewhere that the sound was chimes...

Also, listen to the drum beats at the end... It sounds a little like the pattering muskrat feet at the end of Captain and Tennille's "Muskrat Love." It turns out that Daryl Dragon (the Captain) played piano for (Want You) Back In My Life Again, and perhaps the same sound was utilized by the drummer...

I never thought anything of it, that was the first Carpenters CD that I bought, I just thought it was a nice way to go from a fast song into a ballad, I have never minded it, the chimes are kinda nice if you ask me lol

Ever since YESTERDAY ONCE MORE (the first post-Karen compilation), all compilations that housed "(Want You) Back In My Life Again" included that song and "Ticket To Ride." Since both songs range to the first and last albums, they felt it would be nice on the compilations. Fans cauight on, but also notice that where there's "Superstar", there's almost always going to be a "Rainy Days..." after it.

The fade on BACK is on the master track, and the fade 'fades' only on the SINGLE version of the track (only found on "Japanese Single Box" and the Netherlands edition of "The Ultimate Collection" {correct me if I am wrong on that one, I might be, it's been forever since I played that one, it might just abruptly end}). The fade leads into "When You've Got what it takes", which wasn't a single, so this wouldn't fit on any hits compilation.

As someone who schedules music for a radio station, I can tell you that it's not always about the time period. In fact, it's rarely about the time period. It's about what sounds good next to each other. A song like "Want You" is very upbeat, so if you put another upbeat song next to it, it could be too much. You wanna balance it out with a mellower song, like a ballad. That's why "Want You" has a nice long fade, which can mesh right in to a ballad like "Got What It Takes" or "Ticket."

As a former drummer, that is definitely a fun trick. It's achieved on a conga drum by pressing one elbow hard against the head of the conga, while hitting the rim of the conga with the opposite hand.

Sanks guys!!! That really helps! I thought maybe RD goofed, but I get it! I wanna know how they did that...how did they take the original chimes that went into "the original song it "faded" into" and then moved the chimes and made it fade into "Ticket to Ride" Do you think they re-recorded the chimes for RD:CE? Or did they use some fancy software that removed the sound and put in onto another song?

Do I make any sense here...or have I started talking Hebrew again?

I don't know why I'd be talking Hebrew...I am not Jewish! smile.gif
