Bad

Did Karen ever do anything BAD?...besides her disorder.........There has to be more to her "goody-two-shoes image". Did she EVER break the law in any way?
I bet if the Paparazzi was as crazy as they are now back then we'd know so much more about our beloved Karen...though not EVERYTHING you read in the tabloids is true (we have to keep that in mind)...
So, was she?

I really don't think Karen did anything BAD. She was pretty ordinary and not "wild" in the sense of the current crop of 20 something female stars.
Since they had a real goody 2 shoes image though, anything tame would have been exaggerated had the paparazzi been the way they are now. The celebrities are basically damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Back in March I got an email through my website from a man who claimed to be friends with Karen and Richard during college. He seemed genuine and was very knowledgable about what things were like at Long Beach at the time- names, places, dates etc.
He said in his email that Karen and Richard had tried pot several times and freely smoked it in college
. I'll just try dig up the email. Ok found it. See what you guys make of this-
I knew Karen at Long Beach State, along with Richard. She was one of our crowd. I remember when Ed Appelbaum told us he could make them stars, and we just laughed. She was so young and full of life, and fun. We would sit out on campus under the jacarandas and while away the warm afternoons. We were all "hippies" and we were happy and serious. When the success came she kind of drifted away, but we still saw her sometimes.
One of our friends was Julia Garza (who later married Ed Appelbaum--- Ed was the music professor and the one who engineered it all, according to him) and Doug Crigler and Me and the crazy philosophy prof and all the drugged out crowd. O yes, I knew Karen. I can't believe it was so long ago. She still seems so young and pretty to me. She was so sincere and nice, but she did like drugs too. We were all looking for some diamond in the dark, some way to make the dream live on. She used to climb the trees there on the quad as the evening fell and Richard or Doug would play the recorder or guitar and she would sing. Or we would go into the practice rooms where there were pianos for Richard to play, and they would try out their compositions that they wrote for Ed's class. And when they recorded the first one what a freak out of good feelings. We were so happy for them. I never saw the anorexia, she always ate snacks or things. She was not skinny either. She was very pretty and sweet, and bright. She was one of us.

I don't know if it's true though, honestly. They didn't seem like that kind, you know?

So many of Karen's friends always said (after her passing) that she 'never did drugs, never smoked' etc. So there's really know way to know.

I suppose what happens in college, stays in college. LOL It works for Vegas right? It could be true. We'll never know. People do some dumb things in college for whatever reason.

They were more moderate conservatives than "serious" hippies. I do believe they experimented with pot... what young person at that time had not tried it? I'm sure they did their best to fit in.
The "she liked drugs too" statement is stretching the truth quite a bit.

There seems to be so much wrong with that story posted above. *Andrew whispers* Keep in mind he's probably still on drugs!
You can't trust the internet there is so much false information out there. Some Jo Blow could have come up with that story on the fly. Is it legitimate...NO!
Those are my beliefs anyway.

She probably did SOMETHING. She was a normal person!
Very doubtful about her doing drugs though

Well, in 1971, Karen herself said, "No WAY! I am just petrified of that stuff and I don't wanna get anywhere near it. People do what they do, that's fine, but myself personally... There's too much goin' on, I mean why... waste... Ugh!" (end quote) :-)
She also once said she probably wouldn't know it if she tripped over it. And Karen being Karen, my guess is she would not have liked anything that could have made her feel out of control.

I find the story posted about Karen and Richard pretty suspect.
It seems out of character for them both at the time, especially smoking grass freely and taking on a hippy persona with Karen singing in the trees while Richard and Doug played music below. I'm surprised they didn't mention a bottle of wine in the mix as well.
. .
I think we would have at least heard some mention of this from more reliable sources in all that's been written about them. Plus in a number of early interviews they were pretty adamant about not using drugs. From what we know they were focused on and occupied with their musical endeavors inside and out of college including their Spectrum practices and performances.
