The Songs 2

Was the song All you get from love is a love song written after Karen's divorce (I mean break up) with Tom Burris? And was (Want you) back in my life again also written after their break up. It sure seems that those two songs were inspired by Tom...or maybe other men in Karen's life...course I don't know of any other men in Karen's life other than Tom. So those songs could have been written about anybody...accept (Want you) Back in my life again.
I am alittle confused...help me out!
Weird thoughts,
Andrew

I think it was recorded before the marriage, it was on Passage, I think was 1977, I am not sure, I am pretty sure that it was well before she was married though

Oh, well how about (want you) back in my life again? It sort of seems as though it was written with Tom in mind...I believe it was recorded during their break up. Which I am assuming was a public break up wasn't it?

That was from Made In America 1981, that is a distinct possibility, it is the only song that I can think of that they did that was about a break up, and wanting to get back together, exept for Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, I never thought about it much, maybe someone else has more details on this stuff

I doubt it. Weren't they together until closer to the end of 81? Made in America was already out by then.

Want you back in my life again was written by Kerry Chater / Chris Christian, there's definately no connection to Tom.
Karen never wrote any songs. There are only a couple of Carpenter-originated songs that Richard claims are inspired by real people. One is Mr. Guder, which was a written about a boss that fired them (by them I mean Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, the lyricist). The other is Sandy, which John Bettis wrote about Karen's hairstylist.
What I find amazing is how Karen was able to sing the song "Now" with such believability while she was in the process of separating from Tom. It's one of the most touching love songs that she recorded.

Yeah, I was thinking of "Now" when I viewed this thread. One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.

I don't personally think she was thinking of Tom when she recorded "Want you back in my life again" im thinkin' she was thinkin' of that other guy she dated before Tom that she came close to marrying. Terri somethin...ugh what is his name? I remember hearing something like, when she broke up with Tom, she called him with hopes of getting back together but he was married or something. Its kinda hazy to me lol but its a thought.

Terry Ellis. They tried living together but it only lasted about a week or so. I think he's the only one of Karen's boyfriends that Richard genuinely liked.
But as for her recordings, I really think she was 'in character' and not so much thinking about her personal life, other than the one reference she made to her identifying that she could relate to "I Need To Be In Love".

What happened to her a few months later? I hate to be so ignorant, but I have no idea. You can't be talking about her death because we're still referring to what happened to Karen in 1981, right? Are you talking about her solo album or something? I am totally confused.
By the way I think it's true that Karen was in character while recording (except for "I need to be in love") . That's why it was so believable. People shouldn't bring their personal life into their work life. It just complicates things.
So, let me get this straight "(Want you) back in my life again" was written by other people and was recorded before Karen's break up with Tom...therefore it had nothing to do with Tom?

"Now" was recorded in April 1982, less than 10 months before Karen passed away, and while she was getting a divorce.

Oh.
*not surprised really* I was expecting something more. I thought there was another incident besides her death like a fight or something. But it was just the recording of "Now" that happened? *realizes* oh...right...that would be the last song she'd ever record. *hits himself over the head with bat* obviously!
