Johnny Mathis Loves The Carpenters

JayLumbee's Photo JayLumbee 13 Aug 2007

When Richard talked about Karen's singing style (I think in the Coleman book), in particular her 'breath control' and phrasing - - he mentioned that another singer who was comparable to Karen in that manner to hold LONG breath phrases is JOHNNY MATHIS.

After the Carpenters became popular -voila!- several of their tunes were redone on Johnny Mathis' albums, usually in that same year. He even had a 1970 album called "Close To You" (ha!) & many Bacharach tunes.

His voice is smooth (like Karen's) and warm (like Karen's).

He recorded:
-Close to You
-For All We Know
-Goodbye to Love
-We've Only Just Begun
-Sing
-Solitaire

David Gates of 70s group BREAD ("Baby Im-A Want You" -"Sweet Surrender")is another male singer who also has a similar range/tone to Karen.

"Guitar Man" is very Carpenters sounding
