Did Karen Really Read Tblgintw?

JadensMom02's Photo JadensMom02 10 Aug 2007

Just curious... how did Ray Coleman know that Karen had become "absorbed" by the Best Little Girl in the World book? Had she read it before she met with Levenkron, or did he encourage her to read it? And I have to wonder if she would have seen the movie version, since I believe it aired in 1981, and would have no doubt been something of interest to her. Anyone know?

I don't know. But I was under the impression that Karen chose Dr. Levenkron in part because the book fascinated her. I can't recall where I heard that.

As for the movie, I thought it was aired later than 1981 but I'm likely wrong. laugh.gif

i read the first few chapters of the book and i hated it, on the other hand both the "Room to Grow" by Tracey Gold and the Coleman Bible fascinate me to the edge!!

The movie's release date was May 1981.

I know I read somewhere that Karen had read TBLGITW so many times, her copy was completely worn out. I also think based on what I've read, that she sought Levenkron because she had read that book.

The movie is way better than the book, in my opinion. The girl was a lot more likeable in the movie! But, as Linda will testify, the sequel to BLGITW, Kessa, is much better. I wonder if Karen read A Guide to Treating and Overcoming Anorexia Nervosa, written by the Kron in 1982. She would've been in therapy then - maybe he gave her a copy. laugh.gif That was a really good book, an improvement over BLGITW for sure.

Yes, but only if you read the book "Kessa"

Really? Hmm, interesting. I'm curious to know who said that. Who else could have known she was reading it besides Levenkron?

I actually just bought the movie off ebay, and I an anxious to see it once it arrives. I still wonder if KC ever watched it...

Hmm... good question! She probably had a lot of time on her hands to read while she was in NY.

Something I noticed about the movie, is that Kessa's name was changed to Kacey (pronounced "KC") blink.gif I wonder what Karen would have thought of that. unsure.gif

Oh wow, I never noticed that. laugh.gif

They didn't just change the pronounciation though, I think she was supposed to be a whole other girl, because her last name was different, too.

'Kessa' rocks......I've nearly finished it bowdown.gif to Annie laugh.gif

Also, am I right in thinking that Karen was also encouraged to see The Kron by Cherry Boone as he'd treated her too. So yeah, I think it was a mixture of her reading the book and hearing first hand from Cherry!!!

Oooooooooo and I'd never thought about the Casey(KC) name thing in the film before. Coincidence I'm sure but freaky!! I wonder if Karen did see the movie and as Annie said to, read his other book!!

hmmm.gif

I'm not sure about that, Carolyn. Didn't Cherry see a doctor in Seattle? Or was that Tracey Gold? It's hard to keep everyone straight. laugh.gif

I'm not sure one therapist would see two people who were friends and knew each other. hmmm.gif

Yes Annie, Cherry was treated by Dr. Raymond Vath in Seattle. I read somewhere that she tried to convince Karen to see her doctor instead of going to New York to be counseled by Levenkron.

It certainly would've been closer. hmmm.gif laugh.gif

But maybe she insisted on Levenkron because of the book? Speculating without evidence is fun callme.gif crazy.gif

laugh.gif haha, thanks for that Murray......*I feel stupid* but I knew Cherry had said 'something' to Karen about seeing a 'therapist' I'd just got myself mixed up and didn't check before I typed!!! I will go and see if I can find some 'hard evidence' anyways!! wink.gif
