Scans From My Carpenters Scrapbook

I thought I'd upload some of the magazine articles I've saved over the years, various clippings, etc...
The first one is an article from around 1973 or 1974. I don't recall for sure which magazine it was from, but I think it may have been from a copy of CrawDaddy magazine.
The guy starts off with a nice review of the Carpenter albums, then starts getting a bit negative, if not downright mean... But I've always liked the way he wrote about hearing Ticket To Ride for the first time, and his description of the Offering album.

What a sweetheart. Nice photo of her there. She really wanted her career, but her wish was to have a family of her own. It was never uncomplicated for her once the career got going. Not that the career was the only complication of course. I know we say it time and time again and it's water under the bridge, but I wish she could have had some personal happiness.

Oh, wow. Thanks for that one. How sad. Reading that really drives home the tragedy of her solo album not being released. I think that was a true mistake not to release that album. It shut the door on so many things. She was a multi talented artist who deserved to stretch herself and spread her wings. She was a classic of all classics. Like it was once said.. If different producers were good enough for Streisand, then different producers would have been right for Karen. She was certainly on the same level as Barbra in terms of being one of the very few once-in-a-lifetime female vocalists. She had so much more to grow and give. She could have always come back to work with Richard. It's all just a crime.

People magazine, July 12, 1982 (Xerox)
Karen and Tom Burris announce their separation
(even though the article says "continued," there is nothing more about Karen.
It's a continuation of an article about couples who were separating or divorcing.

You are really the busy scanning bee, Rob! Those are so cool. Thank you so much. It's great to see some "new" things.
She looks lovely in that shot with Tom. I see she's wearing the same outfit from the finale of "Music, Music, Music".
and the scrapbook scans just keep on comin' !

Hi everybody !
I haven't posted in a LONG time, but like a lot of people that visit this site on a regular (daily) basis, I lurk in the background and enjoy reading all of the wonderful discussions that make LS such a pleasure to visit.
Anyway....
Thank you for the scans of these articles. I have never read these before and it was interesting to me to get Karen's blunt feelings on getting married and her career. She was NOT going to interrupt the tremendous sucess that She and Richard were experiencing even if 'True' love were to cross her path. That response tells me that she was focused and utterly determined to continue to keep "Carpenters" a top act in the music business. I think that is one of the main reasons why she married Tom Burris so quickly. I have often wondered if her love for him wasn't just a side effect of her finding the man that fit all of her criteria as a husband, and not because she genuinely loved the guy. Of course I have nothing to base this on other than my own personal observations over the years and even that is based on second-hand information in the form of news articles and interview material on video. I recall Karen 'Itchy' Ramone saying that Karen had a list of qualities and requirements for the man that she would marry. Her main concern being a Gold digger after her money. Interesting that Tom turned out to be wealthy on the surface, and dead broke on the bank statements. The Carpenters own Business/Financial manager Werner Wolfen even said in the latest Carpenters Biography out of England, that at the end of the day Tom had nothing in the bank to show how he could maintain such a wealth-driven lifestyle, and that there had been some 'incidents' between Tom and Karen financially where he was taking money from her bank accounts to cover his debts, and it was implied that Karen may not have known about the money being withdrawn from her bank account at the time. I have taken writers liberty here in describing what Werner spoke about in his interviews on the Biography-type programs, but it's pretty obvious that this was the case when you listen to his (Werners) comments on the biography specials over the years that he really didn't trust Tom at all. It's a shame really that anyone would take advantage of Karen, especially when she was physically so ill and beaten down.
If this is inapropriate for me to speak about Pamela, I appologize. I will totally understand if you remove my comment from this thread.
That aside, I wish all of you a very Happy and SAFE 4th of July. Here in Phoenix the temperature is forecast at 117 degrees. Even at night after the sun has blessedly gone down over the horizon it takes about 6-8 more hours to cool the city down to a comfortable 88-90 degrees. OY OY OY.
I'm gonna hop on over to the thread that is asking the LS members to recall and write about their experiences at attending a Carpenters concert in person. I did go to a concert of theirs in Tucson in 1971 and it was GREAT !
Cheers all.

Glad everyone is enjoying the uploads. I have TONS more to come, but I'm going to bed now... It's 4:15 in the morning here, and I'm beginning to become a little cross-eyed...
