That Culty, Barbie Karen Movie-Anyone see...

Renata's Photo Renata 05 Oct 2003

Well I was watching TV today and I saw the TV guide and I read
Channel 57 Karen Carpenter story
Oh my God! but GUESS WHAT! my cable system DOESNT show that channel! Not at all, you can see some persons on the tv and if you are lucky you can hear some phrases! the image was terrible! I just heard a piece of Don't be afraid, Now and Where do I go from here!
I haven't seen the Karen Carpenter story! I wanna have it but I don't know where can I find it!

And I have a doubt...at the end of the movie I could ''see'' that Karen's mom says goodnight to her and then she says: Karen, I love you and Karen says Me too and that was the end! So the movie doesn't show the day when Karen died???

Hmmm...my channel 57 runs sessions of the House of Commons...so I highly doubt it'll be airing the Karen Carpenter story anytime soon

And I'm pretty sure they included her collapse, because I remember people discussing how they used the same ambulance and stuff...maybe the channel just didn't air it ;)

As all of us who have seen the film countless times know, it begins with a re-enactment of the ambulance rushing Karen to the hospital. The film then flashes back to the family's arrival in California in 1963 and goes forward from there. I've always liked the movie myself-I realize that some liberties may have been taken but the fact that Richard was executive producer kept that nonsense to a minimum(and the soundtrack is priceless).

Aww. I'll probably never get to see it. I remember my mom telling me about it last christmas (the first time I ever heard about Karen) and it seemed so sad and intresting.

Maybe when I'm an actress I'll be in a movie about Karen and you can watch that! (Only I won't be able to sing, or drum, or act for that matter, and I'm not beautiful enough to play Karen....) Well "I can dream, can't I?"

I remember the night the movie premiered. I think Bounce fabric softener was the main sponsor, and I believe the movie finished No. 1 or No. 2 for the year in terms of ratings.
Anyhow, I was playing cards -- Rook, I think -- with friends that night in, I think 1988, and I told them I had to run down to another friend's house because she was recording it for me. It was magical. I still have that old tape, though I think it's a little rough in parts because of age.
Good flick. Hope you get to see it soon, Renata.

Hey beautiful people,

I've read about, and started watching (first 30 seconds) thats movie about Karren that was banned...all acted out with dolls. I want to see it just cause its a cult movie (mmm, cult....) and it seems really artistic and such....I'm really into stuff like that. But then again, its about our Karen, who...who...who I couldn't watch something terrible about. So I was wondering if anyone of you ahs seen it? (you can find it at illegal-art.org) ... ? I'm so tempted to watch but scared too.

Boy, I rather be watching "The Exorcist"! And THATS pretty bad! SO, if you dont get scared easily... watch it, if ya DARE... I didnt think that it was a good movie though, they make Richard seem like a real @$$! And I dont like that! He's probably a very sweet person!!

I haven't seen it, Joanie, but I've heard it's kind of harsh, especially if you're a young Karenite bear :o It might be kind of disturbing for you, and from what I heard it contains certain political views on anorexia nervosa while using Karen Carpenter's story as an example. I don't know, Joaniebear, I think you might want to wait a few years before you watch it, in my opinion. I think I'll wait till I'm 30!
