What Will You Teach Your Children About Kc?

I play music for my daughter constantly and she really doesn't appreciate The Carpenters. She's almost 14 now and is into the popular styles of music of the day and some Classical music as well. My guess is that when she gets older she will discover the music of The Carpenters for herself as a "longlost friend" and realize that dad shared something special with her. That is my hope anyway; however, we cannot choose these things for our children, such as the music they like. They will like whatever they choose to like. We can merely expose them to positive things and give them an informed choice. What do you all think?

Interesting topic, Randy. Your daughter may not ever like the Carpenters' music, but I imagine that as it is the music you listen to, she will grow to think of them fondly due to the association with you, although that probably won't happen now that she's a teenager
But maybe, when she's 65 or something, she'll be at a supermarket and "Close to You'' will come on or something, and she might still think it's not very catchy, but she'll remember you with fondness and wish you were there
I am pretty much certain that my daughter, when I have children, will not be a Carps fan
Considering how amusing life is sometimes, my daughter will probably dye her hair pink, listen to Marilyn Manson, and be into tatoos (although she is so not getting one). As a teenager, she'll probably find the Carpenters to be terribly boring and square, and I imagine she'll probably think of me in the same way, as she buys yet another lather jacket and comes home past her curfew. But, as long as she finds her own identity and her own space in the world, and as long as she can handle the silliness of her well-meaning although unhip mother, I'm sure everything will turn out fine
Looking forward to it!

Tell them just to listen to it for awhile, Renata! I'm sure they'll grow used to it and may even like it!
I'm not sure if I'll even have a child, but if I do, I'd be playing The Carpenters music since it was a baby.

I will never be a Mom, but if I had a child, I'd do what my parents did - have a huge record collection of all types of music! I was so lucky growing up - my Mom & Dad had tons of 78's,45's and LP's and I loved listening to all kinds of music. From Frank Sinatra to Hank Williams. From Doris Day to Patsy Cline, just all kinds of music. And that's what I would do if I had a child. I'd share my music collection (which is a tad heavy on the Carpenter side!) and expose them to everything. Like Randy said, you can't force them to like what you like, all yu can do is share the tunes and hope somewhere inside they like it too!

I have decided to just have more dogs....more Little Toy Fox Terriers...thinking about adding a female to my male in a year or so--then breed them...have about five....I am thankful thus far that God has blessed me with no children....The first song I ever played for my little Toy Fox Terrier was We've Only Just Begun....as my other Toy Fox did, he loves the Carpenters...
Renata, I will share a similar story I had with an old girlfriend...who HATED the Carpenters
(she'd say mean things like "Karen was so stupid" (because of her anorexia)--knowing it would hurt me. (Hey, after living with HER for a while, I GOT RID of her)....But I am wondering if maybe your family's situation is different. NO ONE WHO LOVES MUSIC can HATE the Carpenters; they just wouldn't LIKE music....Because like Richard once said....no matter what anyone says about them, THE MUSIC IS GOOD.
I later found out the real reason why she hated the Carpenters: it was HATE by association. See, she had an old boyfriend she cared deeply about that LOVED the Carpenters (think she attracts certain types
_. Anyway, he left her....did her wrong.
So what she is doing is associating HIM with the Carpenters...the bad memories he left her....My guess is the same with you parents (if I may play Sigmund Freud here a minute).
..Try to explore and see if there was something going on with your parents....some association of a bad time....some OTHER person they cared about that LOVED the Carpenters that maybe betrayed them....or a vast wide scenario of possibilities...What I am saying: They are most likely associating the Carpenters with some unpleasant event....experience and time in their life--and lumping the Carpenters into that....a bad reminder....something of that sort. I mean that may not be the case; but I'd say it is possible
....

Hey, this is a pretty interesting subject! Although Im not thinking of having kids now, for I am a little too young, and DAT would be a no-no!
but IF I DO have kids when Im older, I wouldnt force my daughter to listen to The Carpenters. But I would be happy if she did, 'cause she would be feeling the same happiness I feel whenever I listen to them. but you know, thats MAYBE if I have a kid! MAYBE!

Hey thanks everyone for your replies and opinions on this subject. I agree with you that people are just going to like what they are going to like and you can't force it on them. But, I still think you can plant seeds and some may take root!
