On Top Of The World With The Dixie Chicks

phlipper's Photo phlipper 24 Sep 2003

Has anyone seen the Dixie Chicks perform their "Top of the World" concert? I saw them in San Jose in July.

Can you imagine the smile on my face when the Carpenters song, "Top of the World," was aired after the concert as you are walking out. I could hear others singing it (mine too).

How do artists get permission to use a song like that?

Phlipper--
That is great about the Dixie Chicks. I never really paid much attention to their music until I heard their version of Fleetwood Mac's LANDSLIDE. But after their comments in England about Texas, etc....Well, I just ADORE them

Where in San Jose did you see the Chicks? Half of my family still lives in San Jose....near Saratoga Exit...on Mitzi Drive. I used to live on McLaughlin on the "bad" East End  of town...and there was the Fair and Exposition Center right around the corner from me. Is that maybe where you saw them?

I don't know about getting permission to use a song at the end of a concert....what's involved--maybe one can just play anything they want, since people are simply filing out...I really don't know....

I remember once at Six Flags in Atlanta, waiting in line for a roller coaster. They were showing videos at certain points along the line of the roller coaster in action and a piece of "Top of the World" came on. It then came on, if I recall correctly, during the ride itself, and it really added to the rapturous feeling I get on coasters. It was great.

The concert was held at the same place I think you are referring to. The Sharks Arena; I think it is called The San Jose Arena. Very large. I have also seen the womens' Pac 10 basketball tournament and The Eagles there. :P ( I live in Oakland)

You should definitely check out the Dixie Chicks, and you're right! Landslide is awesome!!

The song that really gets to you though, is this song about this soldier who is going off to war, and asks a waitress if he can write to her while he is gone because he has no family or anything. The song will make you cry, :P bigtime, and I believe that it was because of this idea of going to war that the Dixie Chicks said what they said about Bush. )

The Chicks are extremely talented. I agree with you about their politics.

But it is more than that. They have expressed their views in their music. Geez, what a new concept!!! :P Why should it matter that they are from Texas and disagree with U.S. policies? Where were these people when artists were bagging on Clinton?

However, I am into Love, and it tickled me pink that the Chicks aired a Carpenters' song - All my friends laughed because they know that I am a Karen nut. :)

Nice hearing from you dg.

Phlipper--
I was CONCEIVED in Oakland ;) . My family originally settled in the Oakland area...Alameda....and ran (owned) a nightclub. That is where my mom and dad lived for a number of years. However in the 1960', my uncles, dad, grandmother, cousins, etc...moved on to San Jose and have been there since.

I know where the Sharks play. I have been to that arena. It is downtown on San Jose campus area....I was supposed to be at San Jose State...went through a lot of trouble--and the University of Kentucky had lost all my records showing I had an undergraduate degree...I was trying to get into Grad School; which caused me immense problems...and the inability to enroll (after I had already moved to San Jose.)

I hope to make it back to California one day; and will. Unfortunately my family and I don't get along (that's why I am back in Kentucky!). Actually I had moved to California in spring of 1992--with the thought of NEVER coming back East....but my family insisted on interfering with my life...trying to control me :D (My mom left Oakland when she was eight months pregnant....and I was raised in the east with her...she late divorced my dad, who has remained in California.)

I don't know if you are familiar with it. But I use to hang out at a club on 1st Street in San Jose called FX....I can't think of their name now...but before they were famous, that band that made Walking on the Sun..and All-Star among other hits are from San Jose....use to play there. Boy, I miss the San Jose clubs!

Anyway...I couldn't agree more with your politics. Enough said, I suppose.

And yeah...HAIL! HAIL! The Dixie Chicks.

Hey DQ!
I haven't lived in Oakland long. I do like it here though. Except for the fact that I am a Broncos fan living amongst Raiders. :D

I am not that familiar with San Jose. But I am familiar with Alameda. I go to Sports bars there and watch the games. ;)

Being a Carpenters fan is also a perk here! There was a band here called "The Karen Carpenter Combo." I couldn't believe it. They are a cover band for the Carpenters. A gal and a guy who dress up like the Carpenters and play their music.

They have a Christmas show each year where they emulate one of the Carpenters' Christmas Specials, and have "guest stars," like Herb Albert, Barbra Strieisand, Peggy Lee and Tom Jones."

I heard that they were not doing it this year after doing for the prior 8 years. Bummer!

Anyway, many of my favorite 70's groups come around the Bay Area every year. Here are the ones I've seen: Olivia Newton John, Donna Summer, Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot, America, Ambrosia, John Ford Coley, Eagles, Al Stewart, Gary Wright, Cris Williamson.
It's great!!!

Sorry about your family trying to control you. I know what that is like too.

You have my utmost sympathies. The Raiders, ugh....they make me wanna puke. :D

HOWEVER, last Monday's game should shut up those Raiders fans for awhile, eh?

:D Yes!
The first game I ever attended here was a Bronco/Raiders game. I showed up to the gate with a Broncos shirt on. The ticket person told me that they could not let me go to my seat with that shirt. I said "Why?." She said, "Because we've seen bloody faces come up from there." ;) (Our seats were 4 rows up from one of the endzones - Not the Black Hole, though)

Anyway, I replied, "But I'm a woman," in which she said, "Believe me! It doesn't matter. You cannot wear that shirt down there." :o

So, I took the shirt off. (I had a tank top on underneath)
I am so glad that I did. The Broncos were behind the whole game until the last minute when Ray Crockett intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown, and John Elway followed it up with a touchdown in the last 10 seconds.
If I had had that shirt on, I would have been bombarded with beers, batteries, cans, whatever. Those fans were soooooooooo pissed!!!

Well, I left without getting to wear my shirt, but I was smiling at least. :D

Now, I wait until the day before the Broncos/Raiders game, and I go "shopping' and to a "movie" wearing Bronco gear around Oakland. People glare, but do nothing. It is enjoyable.

Here's a good question. Do you think that there are any Raiders Fans that are also Carpenters Fans?

Okay Phlipper and Lilly--
I am a Raiders fan that has SHUT UP :D I believe Oakland has gotten a little rougher since the old days my mom and dad lived there.

That Karen Carpenter Combo or whatever you were speaking about sounds like fun. I've often, myself, fantased about getting a band together....not acting like the Carpenters....but singing only Carpenter material. Since so many of their songs have gone unheard, the audience wouldn't even know they were Carpenters, unless you told them.

Of those groups you mentioned, I have seen ONJ, Eagles, Al Stewart and America...I may have seen some of those others. There was a period in my life when I went to so many concerts, that I sometimes get confused who I saw...as so many have blended together...and in those old days my state of mind was sometimes "hazy" ;)

By the way, I DO like the Broncos.

Hey DQ:
I have three tickets to the Raiders/Broncos game here in Oakland.
Maybe it's time to visit????

Actually, I like living here. I have never lived in a better place for weather. Plus, CA has so much flora. :D

The Karen Carpenter Combo actually freaked me out a little when I saw it. We went to see them and another group called SuperDiamond, which was a cover of Neil Diamond.
As the Karen Carpenter Combo started singing, I started getting a chill up my spine. The gal playing Karen did resemble Karen, and had a good voice. (obviously, no one's voice is as good as Karen's), but still it was awesome.

After they were done, the gal came and sat by me to watch SuperDiamond, and I was too flustered to talk to her. I finally mustered up enough nerve and told her that she really did a great job (I was too chicken to tell her that I was there specifically to see her, not SuperDiamond) ;)

That's so cool, phlipper!! So I guess you like the Dixie Chicks. I never heard one of their songs. A lot of people say their good though. It looks like I should buy their cd. :D

Wow, I've never heard of someone being a Raiders fan *and* liking the Broncos...but if you're for real, David, then I have to be indifferent to the Raiders half. ;) I promise not to slam 'em until the next Raiders/Broncos game.

I am not a fan of the Oakland Raiders like I am the Oakland A's in baseball. I am not FANATIC about the Raiders..and don't care THAT MUCH. I just have that affinity for them in my heart, because of my past history with the area. So...what I am trying to say--my heart isn't EXACTLY all with the Raiders--hence, a better understanding of my being a Raiders and Bronco fan...cause you're right, you don't usually see the Raiders/Bronco fan combo. :D Actually, I am not a BIG football fan...though I follow it, along with most other sports.

Phlipper, you may call me David if you like....And, yes I need to get back in the Bay area. One of my best friends from high school had been living in San Francisco for the past years. Last year she got laid off her job...and moved to Sonoma County, where another friend of of ours lives, along with her husband. She introduced her to her future husband.

Well Cynthia, who is 44 married a man of 70 (I mean hey, look at Clint Eastwood). The good perk of this is that her husband is no James Rowe, who owns Pezzi Vinyards in Healdsburg (sp?) CA. And they are ALWAYS having some kind of celebration on the ranch...anyway, another reason for me to come to California.

I have been fighting the dilemma, lately....as my roots are California (My family in San Jose always referred to me as "The California Kid")...See, I wrote my family this awful five-page letter (which in hindsight was really harsh...although I meant every word) in 1992.

I first started visiting California regularly, behind my mother's back...who didn't want me involved with my dad's family (silly how families are, huh?....Anway, as most everyone on the forum knows, my mother passed away in May....So, I have been fighting the dilemma of letting "sleeping dogs lie"...Or, as others are trying to persuade me....using the opportunity to say (as I often do)--hey, the past is a foreign country, they do things different there....So, I may drop them a note...I know 11 years is a long time not to communicate....they're getting old...Anyway, I tell you this, because I may very well make it back out to California in the very near future....You are right, there is no weather like it....and actually, Oakland's weather is better than San Jose weather, I think...but can hardly marvel San Francisco's. Interesting about the Karen Carpenter Combo. (I often find myself at a loss for words in those situations--but obviously not writing...as I type SO FAST... ;)

Phlipper--
On review of my note...I noticed I put down the wrong "age" of my friend from the wine country. I don't recall her exact age...but I believe she is "frozen" and 34 :snide

Hey David!

1992 was a strange year for a lot of people. I had a horrendous break-up that year. (My significant other ran off with my best friend)
And, I had too much pride to tell my family what actually happened, so there was no comfort from them.
But yes, things do change with families. I am sorry about your mother. It is strange how we have so much time in this life to do things, but yet so little time. Your family would probably be happy to hear from you.

Getting back to the Broncos/Raiders :snide
I definitely love the A's though. Go A's!!!! The firm I work for gets season tickets, so we get to go quite often. They also have 49ers tickets, so we get to go to those games. I like the 49ers, but have no major passion for them.

FYI: The big boss in my firm loves the Carpenters. She told me that years ago she gave her favorite Carpenters album away in a weak moment, and has always regretted it. So we basically spread the word around about the Carpenters. All the 20+ year olds in our office are getting a huge dose of the Carpenters. I hope The Carpenters Combo continues. Perhaps they are on this website.

Nessa and Lilly: You should get a Dixie Chicks CD. They are more "pop" then country, but maybe you would disagree after hearing them. I say "pop" because they are not as "twangy" as other country artists. This song called "The Cowboy song" is soooooooooo awesome. It gives you chills to hear it.
