Saturday Night Live/carpenters

I've been watching late at night on the weekends some old Saturday Night Live reruns from the 1970's. They always have a musical guest. I can't help but wonder why The Carpenters NEVER appeared on Saturday Night Live? Seems to me this could have REALLY helped them image...helped make them hip. I mean the show was on for a LONG time when they had MANY hits; and most other musical groups of the day who had hits were on the show.
If The Carpenters had done Saturday Night Live, what TWO songs do you think would have been good for them...to help widen their appeal of "hipness"?
I would pick B'Wana She No Home, That's Right The Women Are Smarter...(maybe Calling Occupants?)--obviously I am stuck on Passage album for this!

Sorry folks. Obviously this topic belongs in the GENERAL CHAT about Carpenters and not OFF TOPIC....I guess I haven't had enough caffeine yet today!

Yeah I see what you mean...SNL Would have made the Carpenters sing "cooler"
... however SNL is such a party hardy kind of show...I just can't see Karen and Richard on it!

I think the Carpenters could have gotten away with singing more pop-ish tunes on SNL, like Please Mr. Postman and (Want You) Back In My Life Again.

I think the cast of SNL would have chewed them up and spit them out! I watched that show all the time in the 70's - John Belushi would have laughed at them!

Yeah, that would have been really scary!
I don't think SNL ever created an image for anyone though, the people on that show already had a certain image....which the Carpenters didn't really have. So I imagine that's probably why they were never invited.

I agree with all of you. It would have been a disaster for the Carpenters ever to have been on SNL. I dont t think they would have ever been asked to be on it either.

I think that Karen and Richard would surprise all of us. I think behind those pearly white teeth, and wholesome images, were two people who really knew all to cut up at all things. Remember all what Karen said in People. I think they probably could have even done some skits with the cast members. They probably would have sang jumbayla and fun fun fun.

LOL, Ray
Well, I guess anything is possible, but I don't know...what did Karen say in People?

I believe Karen was a real comedic talent. That is evident on some of her TV shows...and she appeard VERY HAPPY, at ease in the comedic role. So, I think you are right..
As far as short-lived John Belushi goes...He may haved laughed at the Carpenters...but it may have been his LAST laugh

That would've been great!
