Was There A Tribute To Karen?

Ray's Photo Ray 22 Sep 2003

I was just curious, I know recently when stars pass away, they always seem to pay some sort of respect, by have a televison tribute. Does anyone know if when Karen died, if there was a televison tribute to her?

I havent heard of any tribute shows. Copies of it probably would have been floating around. I've only seen/heard of Current Affair type shows about her passing. But no tributes that I can think of right now.

Pam is right Ray. There really wasn't anything on TV besides like "Current Edition" type shows. Nothing that was really a tribute to Karen.

Hi Ray!

I live in Japan. I had stayed away from radio, TV or newspaper after Karen's passing away. I couldn't listen to Carpenters music. So I didn't attend the meeting.
But I lately knew that Carpenters fans in Japan got together and watched the film concert of Budokan with Richard in 1983. This film concert may not be completely the tribute you mean, but I'd like to share with you.
They say that Richard also appeared on Japanese TV with about 40 or 50 fans.

There was a Carpenters Tribute concert held in Tokyo, Japan this Feb. 28th at the hall with capacity about 2000 seats. If Top Of The World Fundraiser was not on 1st of March, Richard might come to Japan. Three Japanese female singers sang Carpenters songs with the band. And a member of the band wrote SUNTORY POP jingle. One of singers was Akiko Kobayashi whose album"Akiko"(="City of Angels" in Japan) Richard produced. Akiko also sang Carpenters songs on the internet radio, and we could hear clips from the radio on demand this spring.
Akiko's CD "A Song For You~Carpenters anthology" with Moscow Symphony Orchestra was released this spring.

Here is Yuka's Japanese website.
http://www.kamome.or.jp/yuka/
There are "Carpenters Perform Carpenter(US version)", Gold CD"Twenety-two Hits of the Carpenters" with DVD(Japan) and "A Song For You-Carpenters anthology" on her top page and links to amazon. "City of Angels" is still available in Japan. If you click on "A Song For You~Carpenters anthology", and click on the name of Akiko(Japanese characters below the CD title), you will go to another page, you click on triangle icon left to 2nd GO icon and choose 4th and click on GO icon, you will see 5th album is "City of Angels" (1988/03/25).

Morinaga Hi-Crown Chocolate Commercial is at 1 of Disc 3. I love this song.

You know, I seem to remember not long after Karen's death that Marilyn McCoo (spelling anyone?) sang a wretched, altered version of "We've Only Just Begun" on, I think, "Solid Gold." It was positively dreadful and repulsively sentimental: something like, "She'd only just begun." I didn't listen much past that.

Yes, Sakura, I agree about the Morinaga jingle. It is absolutely stunning, especially to be a commercial. I think the only reason I wouldn't say it is my favorite Carpenters song of all time is that it is so short. There are other equally powerful brief phrases in other songs, too, but the Morinaga commercial blows my mind with its utter purity and clarity. No one, and I mean no one, could ever have sung that song that well.

Thanks for your message, Steve.

I posted the following to Game Rooms before:
Before Olivia Newton-John sang "Country Roads" and "Close To You" this
April in Japan, she said "These next two songs I wanted to sing, Because I
know that these two people are very popular in Japan. And they were very
good friends of mine and I miss them, So I'd like to sing these songs for
them."
I know almost all of you heard Olivia's "Close To You", but I am going to
write the link.

I read that Olivia sang "Rainy Days And Mondays" at her concert and an Olivia fan downloaded it.

I found the PHOTO of KAREN & OLIVIA at "Hollywood Nights" todaay on Olivia's site.

Scroll to bottom, please.

DID OLIVIA APPEAR ON "Space Encounters"? Or did Pamela talk about Hollywood Nights?

When I heard "Ticket To Ride", I typed "todaay" not "today" in my previous message. LOL. Excuse me.

Sakura, that Olivia clip rules. She was no Karen (and never pretended to be), but I like her version of "Close to You" a lot better than Streisand's.

Steve,

I'm sorry but I have not heard Barbra Streisand's "Close To You".

But I like "Evergreen-Theme from A Star Is Born". Was this song written by
Barbra and Paul Williams?

Sakura,

I think you're right about who wrote "Evergreen," and I like it too, as well as many other Streisand songs. But her "Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun" are waaaaaaaay oversung, in my opinion. If I recall, they're on her "For the Record" multi-CD set. Seems like she did "Close to You" with Burt Bacharach present.

For my money, Streisand is a great singer whose main weakness is her penchant for oversinging, for making intense power ballads out of songs that are strong BECAUSE of their simplicity, not IN SPITE of it. I cannot bear to hear her sing "Make Your Own Kind of Music," the point of which is not to try to impress the world but to enjoy yourself. She goes off into these wild crescendos that just make no sense.

Still, she has a fabulous talent, no doubt about it.

Cheers,
Steve

That's a really good version! I like to hear how other artists sing songs of your favorite singer! But as always, I have to go with Karen. Oh! You know what would be so cool?! If Karen and Olivia did a duet together! I'd love to hear them sing "Hurting Each Other"!

Hi All,

No Official TV / Radio Tribute was Organised -I Would Think Richard and Family Were in No Condition to Attend / Perform etc ;)

I Am Surprised A&M Did Not Arrange a Concert or A&M Soundstage Tribute Later in 1983 -Perhaps Richard Vetoed Any Plans ? Herb Alpert May Have Felt Carpenters Albums Served As Due Memorial

However Richard Did Organise a Concert Tribute For Karen in June 1983 At Long Beach Church , Richard performed Along with John Bettis and Family , Friends and a Few Fans Attended :D

Richard and University Choir First Performed Look To Your Dreams , a Karen Favourite For Everyone , All Who Did Attend Assure me This was a Great Musical Tribute

Steve--
You hit the nail on the head about Barbara Streisand. I believe all of us recognize her as a GREAT singer, and in the past most of us included her in her repetoire. But she's too showy...overdone...too many frills. Obviously, all of us like better the simplicity...right out front...straight out there...simple voice of Karen. I would like to have heard Karen sing, "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life"...one of my favorite's of Barbara's. My favorite Barbara Streisand growing up was the soundtrack from "A Star Is Born" that featured "Evergreen"...plus, I really liked "Superman". Enough of that "Enough Is Enough" with Donna Summer :D

It is interesting to note, while Barbara Streisand is considered one of the world's greatest singers, when those of us on this forum discussed the topic....and listed all of our favorite singers. I do not recall ONE SINGLE PERSON mentioning Barbara Streisand on their list.

(My friend in Healdsburg, CA sent me for my birthday last year....and I did enjoy looking at it....the Christie's catalogues (two) of all Barbara Streisand's furniture, artwork, jewelry, etc up for auction...AWESOME.) ;)
