Karen And Elvis: The Silver Screen
dgfarnsworth
22 Sep 2003
Let's imagine...Hmmm, Karen and Elvis starring together on the silver screen...
To their astonishment, studio executives have found a long, lost Elvis feature film--in the vault since the '60s. Elvis, the King of Crock and Wheels, yes....sleepwalks through another comedic feature. The film, at first, was scrapped; then, dicovered many years later in the 1970's. A release date had been set for the mid-1970's but a public-relations nightmare had ensued: Elvis' leading lady, so-so French singer Claudine Longet (singer Andy Williams' former wife)--had just been found guilty--in REAL LIFE--of shooting her lover, skier Spider Savich at a ski resort: A nightmare for the filmakers. The supposed-to-be released flick, starring Claudine, was set at a Colorado ski lodge. A no-brainer: the movie had to be scrapped.
However, when studio executives discovered the film recently, they were delighted. The film was obviously one of Elvis' best (as far as Elvis movies go, you know). And an up-and-coming studio exec had a brilliant idea: Why not use the movie today as a vehicle to introduce newly discovered music by Elvis; as well as new (and old) music by another female singer still topping the charts today--years after her death.
After much consultation, the plan was announced. The studio felt having a singer to rival Elvis in a movie just might be the ticket (someone not so kitteny as Ann Margaret but more wholesome...that could really SING.) With the climate of the world today bent on nostalgia and years gone by...a perfect formula was created. Karen and Claudine were not that disimilar in stature--so many shots on the ski slope...from a distance....behind shots could still be maintained in the film. And with the advent of technology today....Karen's image could be edited in....morphed in...in lieu of Claudine. Claudine spoke broken English in the original....and mainly French throughout. So the need for Karen's speaking voice was not necessary. Another French actress would be brought in--and the voice over-dubbed. It would be mentioned in the film that French singer (Karen) Angelique Antoinette marveled all with her ability to sing English lyrics phonetically (just like Nat King Cole). And after settling on most of the details, studio executives have decided to let Carpenters fans choose the songs used in the film. This is where we need your input....
What should the movie's title/and theme song (a duet between Karen and Elvis) be? My choice: THIS MASQUERADE.
Angelique Antoinette, the Deauville singer, had made a name for herself modestly, as she had supported herself over the years singing at coffee houses and small clubs worldwide. While Antoinette had come from one of the wealthiest families in France (and heir to a vast perfume fortune)--she had been raised poor....never realized her family had anything until she went away to college. Thus, she had always schemed at ways to make a living. Miraculously (maybe not so...since "perfume" was in her family's blood) she had concocted a perfume formula...started her own business. And long story short, had marketed a perfume that was a worldwide hit.
Angelique's perfume shares the same name as one of her hit singles....that is also the perfume's "jingle" on TV.
What should the perfume be called?
My choice: NOW.
The movie begins with Angelique arriving at the CRESCENT NOON LODGE at the same time World Championship skier Shayne Jerome (Elvis) arrives. Angelique has volunteered singing engagement proceeds for a stint at the lodge's PURPLE ONION pub. Angelique and Shayne's first encounter is a hilarious one. Shayne is befallen by sneezing fits....uknowingly allergic to "something" in the lodge's grate room. Is it the mistletoe or fragrance of the Christmas tree that sets Shayne into unbearable sneezing and wheezing fits? Why no (of course!): Shayne is allergic to Karen's revolutionary perfume fragrance--which results in some hilarious movie classic moments. How can Shayne get close to Angelique; yet, keep his distance at the same time?
As typical in all Elvis movies, a firstfight breaks out in the PURPLE ONION pub. Shayne, who has fallen for Angelique...love at first sight...comes to her rescue when a sloppy, drunken patron won't stop talking over Angelique's singing....and continues to blow cigarette smoke Angelique's way (and the pub is non-smoking). Angelique stops her singing, to politely ask the patron to put out his cigarette. The drunk refuses. Shayne to the rescue....POW!...WHAM!....KABAMM!....KAZOW!...The fists just start a-flowin'....
What song (duet, medley) should be playing as background fight music?
My choice: A Little Less Conversation/A Kind of a Hush.
Okay, now when the fighting and madness all end, what song should Angelique continue singing?
My choice: I Need To Be In Love.
Additionally, there is a "lovers" scene later in the film,
What love song of Elvis' will Karen sing to Elvis?
My choice: Love Me Tender.
What Carpenters love song will Elvis be singing to Karen?
My choice: All You Get From Love Is A Love Song.
An important scene involves a misunderstanding between new lovers Angelique and Elvis: when Angelique spies Elvis kissing under the mistletoe....a buxom, blonde bippy who has just arrived at CRESCENT NOON LODGE. (This bimbette, Trishy Candy, is but a spy...a decoy...a plant....to use Shayne to get to Angelique's secret perfume formula. ) Out of the corner of his eye, Shayne sees Angelique while kissing Trishy Candy....and realizes what she is thinking--I mean, hey, it was the mistletoe, as Trishy had insisted to him. Shayne runs to explain to Angelique that there's nothing between him and bippy Miss Candy. But Angelique locks herself in her cozy lodge room...and bursts into tears.
Angelique's confident and constant traveling companion, Mimi (a role played by "GOOD TIMES" Esther Rolle), realized the fateful love between the two....and arranges for Angelique and Shayne to to get stuck on the ski-lift chair together--thus, forcing their reconcilation....repairing their love-meant-to-be. As they kiss and make-up....they continue their ascent to the top of the mountain for the World Championship Skiing Competition Benefit.
What Carpenters/Elvis song(s) will they break into? Pick one that can be continued as a dance number when they reach the top and meet those in the skiing competition.
My choice: Don't Try To Win Me Back Again...and/or I Want You Back In My Life Again.
Meanwhile, after this scene....the movie cuts to Trishy Candy, displaying the "foil" of the platinum blonde vixen. This kitteny bimbette unsuccessfully attempted to steal Angelique Antoinette's perfume formula. Having intelligence from her spies reporting that Angelique always carried the formula with her in a clutch purse reeking of AVON.......Well, through a madcap, frenzied caper (where Trishy gets stuck in the lodge dumbwaiter for hours....she managed to snatch the clutch (purse)--by hiding in the dumbwaiter. However, when she happily arrived back at Malibu, this sweet thing, Miss Candy, much to her dismay realized that the formula stolen was a fraud: Actually, it was but a recipe for Antoinette's favorite aromatherapy of Green Tea/Mandarine Orange. Sigh....
What should Trishy Candy's theme music always been when she appears in the film (Elvis or Carpenters)?
My choice: Goofus (of course!)
Later that evening, at the World Skiing Championship Awards ceremony, Elvis is given the prize money for taking the championship (where he broke ANOTHER world record!). (The competition had been a benefit to supply crochet, yarn and other needlepoint materials to Old Folks Homes Worldwide, Inc..)
As all the "lodgers" stand glowing around the overwhelming large, picturesque and fragrant Christmas tree...in front of the large lodge fireplace....Angelique breaks into a Christmas song.
What Christmas song should Angelique sing?
My choice: Merry Christmas, Darling.
Then, what Christmas Song duet should Elvis and Karen sing?
My choice: White Christmas.
As the screen credits roll....and people exit the theatre, what Carpenters or Elvis duet would be appropriate for the two--just to clench the movie's ending?
My choice: You're Just In Love.
(An important note: There was a small part offered to Richard Carpenter...a cameo to be possibly inserted in the film. But Richard unequivacably declined the role as the PURPLE ONION pub's "Piano Picker".....(and he was reported to have been disgruntled....and heard to repeat: Pick an apple....pick a guitar....pick your nose...but...."pick" a Piano? Who EVER THOUGHT of such an absurdity?)
Oh, by the way....if this Elvis/Karen feature does well, talk abounds of doing another film--this time perhaps away from the snowy country....maybe Elvis in Hawaii (my, that is a unique thought!)....close to the Hawaii city....the lights....Maybe we'll call this one HONOLULO CITY LIGHTS?
What are YOUR thoughts? Don't be restricted to just this movie formula, if you don't want. What are YOUR other ELVIS/KAREN movie ideas?

Sorry for off course from silver screen, just after Elvis's passing a DJ of
American Top 40 in Japan went to US. (She wrote Japanese lyrics of Police's
"Doo Doo De Da Da Da" that we talked about on another topic.) She was a fan
of Elvis and John Denver. So she went to Management Three to ask where John
was. She happened to see Karen & Richard when they left Management Three. She
asked Karen & Richard to tape their message for Japanese listeners to her
recorder. Although Richard was in hurry, Karen & Richard taped a message. DJ
asked Karen about Elvis. Karen valued the stuffed animal which Elvis
presented for her at a dressing room when Karen called him at the stage in
Las Vegas. The stuffed dog was with a kennel with poplulation grass. Karen
said "We both just heard Japanese fans are enjoying "Passage" album, we
thank you for that." Richard was worried about Karen's condition.

Sakura--
I appreciate that information on Elvis and Karen...the stuffed animal, etc. I didn't know that.
I, myself, was never really an Elvis fan....but saw many of his movies as a kid at the drive-in. I just had this bizarre idea about--what if Karen and Elvis DID make a movie together?
I mean, if Elvis can star opposite Mary Tyler Moore (Mare!)--I believe "Change of Habit"? Obviously, I have a "vivid and bizarre" imagination....and hope no one was offended by the fantasty of Elvis and Karen.
As expected....I didn't think anyone would respond to this post...as it was so involved and in left field...but just wanted to put the "fantasy" out there.....Obviously this topic SCARED everyone away
So, I do appreciate your slight digression from my story....by enhancing the reality of a REAL LIFE EPISODE with Karen and Elvis. Thanks again, Sakura. You are a wealth of information; and I ALWAYS enjoy reading what you have to offer all of us

Is this for real? I certainly hope so, because you missed a bunch of songs that should be used in a movie like that. I will expand if it is, indeed, real.

David, you have a wild imagination!! That would have been quite a story if it had been true! You should write scripts or something
I don't know much about Elvis or his career, so I can't really add to it....
Sakura - Elvis gave Karen a stuffed dog with grass? That's funny!

I just thought about something since being on the topic of movies.... sorry if this is off topic to your post.... Karen auditioned for True Grit with John Wayne. They always video tape auditions....so there has to be a tape floating around of her. If indeed she she did a formal audition.
Just thought I'd throw that out there while its on my mind.

Annie, that's right. The kennel had covered with population grass.
Karen's room was full of stuffed animals presented by fans and Elvis! LOL
David, thanks for your kind message. I happened to find Elvis download site last week.

Do you choose songs for your movie from Elvis' songs?
I had thought "Love Me Tender" was a love song. When I saw "Love Me Tender" special on TV last Sunday, I knew that the song was sung for Elvis Mom.
Pamela, I also read it. Thank God that Karen didn't pass(?) the audition and live in sliver screen. Karen is a singer!!

Yeah, Sakura....In the FANTASY movie one could pick Elvis songs. I just don't know many Elvis songs. Oh, yes, I would recognize them if I heard them....but can't spit them out like the Carpenters....
I certainly would be interested in any conversation Karen and Elvis might have head. Certainly there were a lot of commonalies they could talk about: fame, pressure, etc....
