Be sure to let us know how it sounds!

I've heard a few of those tracks. It's a very distinctive 1980's sound, if I can remember correctly. laugh.gif bowdown.gif:

Will do, I identify with the eighties sound, and the seventies, sixties, fifties, 'tis painful to wander back so far, so easily. biggrin.gif

Well done Silv! smile.gif

I remember hearing these songs for the first time and nearly falling off my chair when I realised that the opening track is the John Farnham classic, such an unusual choice for Richard to choose as one of the selections for the album.

Hi Stephen.

I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to like it.

It's a coincidence of sorts that you bring up John Farnham. I only came across him last year.

I used to do some voluntary work, and one of the people I visited was a tetraplegic. He was mugged in Austrailia coming out of a music shop where he had just purchased John Farnham's - Whispering Jack. His attacker hit him across the back with a metal bar, thus breaking his back.

He played the CD all the time and I ended up making a copy for myself. Had it been me, I don't think I could have beared to play that CD again.

i heard these songs on Donalds Old site, House of Goofus..Chance in a million and show me the way to your heart are the Stellar Tracks!! Love it love it love it! espicially show me the way to your heart is very power balladish 1980s style..see the 1980s love songs were the best..Sadly Karen didnt live long enough to sing and record those songs or similair styles..the power ballads of the 1980s pulled at your heart strings..just like karen could do to any song. i have to be honest..Karen sang some really lack luster songs..some very simple lyrics..but her beauty came through and saved the day..dont take it personal but i love more advanced mature and fluid lyrics than most of what karen sang. would love to heard karen sing
"Show me the way to your heart" she showed us all the way to her heart..every day..by just being herself.

Love always,

Michael

I've had a chance to liten to the CD a couple of times. It was lovely to see some of the old crew in the album credits. Joe Osborn, Tony Peluso, Jim Getzoff, Joel Peskin. Bass guitar was Abe Laboriel (Paul McCartney's live band).

Track listing & credits (for anyone unfamiliar).

YOU'RE THE VOICE.
Andy Quinta & Maggie Ryder
(This is a c/v from John Farnham/Whispering Jack).

YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND.
Carole King
(Another cover)

SHOW ME THE WAY TO YOUR HEART
Ryo Asuka & Pamela Phillips Oland

CALL ON ME.
Randy California
(Great track. Randy and his son died from a drowning tragedy).

WHAT AM I GONNA SAY.
Richard Carpenter & Pamela Phillips Oland
(The way Scott promounces gonna (gowna) is a distraction. Overall a very weak song.

I DON'T EVEN MIND.
Walker Iggleheart, Michael Joyce & Thomas Kimmel

YOU BELONG TO ME.
Greg Sutton & John Herron

ONLY LOVE.
Pam Reswick, Steve Werfel & Mark Holden

PRESSURE DOWN.
Harry Bogdanov
(Another c/v from the John Farnham Whispering Jack album).

WALKIN' ON WATER
Chris Thompson & Tom Whitlock

CHANCE IN A MILLION
Tom harriman, Patrick De Remer & Robin Lerrier

Overall a middling album at best. Uninspired use of Synths. The cover version are great songs, done better elsewhere. Some interesting production values, a conscious decision to break away from the Carpenters sound. Some nice songs and arrangements. Based on what I've heard here, I don't think the Carpenters as a duo had a lot left, and Karen was right to start shopping around. Richard probably recognized this and walked away, when this and Time failed to make a splash . This album explains a lot of mystery for me. Karen's shoes just couldn't be filled...

Edited to make sense. Sometimes I know what I want to say and my brain won't co-operate: - )

I think that's pretty much what most people thought Silv, it was fantastic to hear them but the tracks didn't really set anything alight. I agree that Richard probably didn't want to even try and recreate the Carpenters' sound, and opted instead to go with the sound of the day, which is those awful, overused synths and computerised drum sound. There's no substitute for real strings and instruments.

Thank you Silv for the info about writers and original artist. bowdown.gif
Who was a sax player?

I didn't know John Farnham is former Little River Band singer, I knew his name as Olivia Newton-John related person. laugh.gif

I am old enough to feel excitement of sound revolution of DX-7. I created sound with DX-7. tongue.gif bye.gif
I have not touched it for years. Last month I took my daughter to swimming pool, the building has music room with 2 DX-7!! laugh.gif

I visited P.P. Oland's website before, I knew she wrote lyrics of "SHOW ME THE WAY TO YOUR HEART" but the site didn't have co-writer's name. Ryo Asuka is Japanese singer/song writer. I searched for this song in Japanese search engine. He wrote this song(originally called "Futari") for Japanese idol group.
A music commentator, who is suposed to write liner notes for Carpenters Japanese single collection box, played this song on his radio show back then. I have not known Scott Grimes' song played on Japanese starion.
The commentator also appeared on NHK Carpenters Special several years ago. It was short remake from "Close To You".

Around 1989 Ray Charles covered a Japanese song, and the song became his biggest hit in Japan. "Genius Loves Company" Japanese release has the song as a bonus track.
I wonder if there were projects in which they made Japanse songs sing oversea artists.
How did Richard know Japanese writer's song? cool.gif

In Richard's arrangement for another Japanese song "I Dream" case, a Japanese producer asked Richard and Richard suggested Pamela P. Oland for lyricist and Sixth Wave and more singers for singers. The song was renamed for "When I Dream" for English version.
"Zaitsu Songs-a Cappella", audio sample headphones.gif

4th song is "When I Dream".

Edit:
When we talked about Scott before, he released album and did concert.(2005) We can his new album's sample(15 songs) on AllMusic.com now.

Sakura,

Where sax was used Joel Peskin played. The liner notes are very limited but contain lyrics...

It was interesting to hear Scott's voice these days, on those soundbites Sakura, tone is a little mellower and his range is lower too...

Stephen. What you said!

The best Synth inspired album I've ever heard is Beach Boys - Love You. Arguably Brian Wilson's first solo album, the boys had so little input. Chock full o' burping synths, melodies to bring tears to these eyes at least. I love it as much now as I did when I first heard it back in the seventies. There, I've managed to bring the Beach Boys into a thread again, it'll have to stop! smile.gif

After repeated plays, the up-tempo numbers are growing on me, some very nice touches production wise, and the harmonies between Richard and Scott are fabulous. A big regret for me, is that Richard didn't take lead vocals with Scott on back up/harmonies.

There's a very interesting finish at the end of track five where the vocals hit a low drone very much like Tibetan prayer chant or a Gregorian hymn. I wish, Richard would have developed that idea further, it makes the hairs on my arms stand on end. Hypnotic headphones.gif
