I Can't Believe My Sister!

my sister must be on something, because karen has the most beautiful voice in the world!!! my sister doesn't know beautiful voices. she's all into the r&b and rap thing so i don't expect her to know timeless classic music. ppl that have beautiful voices (in her view) are norah jones, alicia keys and beyonce, they they have nice voice and although i LOVE beyonce, she's no karen carpenter, they both have beautiful voices in their own way, but for her to say that karen can't sing is like saying baseball is not a an american sport. and i absoutley HATE it when anyone sings ANY carpenter song unless it's her brother and he's singing or just playing the music yeah he can do whatever he's the brother, but NO ONE not patti la belle, not celine dion, not beyonce, because no one can touch the way karen sang her songs. she sang it from the depths of her soul, because she went through it, she felt it, the pain in her voice, the purity of her voice, the sweetness and classic of her voice can not be defined, replaced, or resang, and that's why i don't want anyone TOUCHING the carpenters music.

That's very well put.

Sounds like you're passionate about the issue.
But yea, I like Karen best too, but unfortunately the Carpenters don't own music, so people are allowed to record whatever they like.

Most singers today are "loud" singers - Celine, Beyonce, etc...the vocal acrobatics type. Karen just sang beautifully. I think it's just too different to compare, really.
I agree...

Great stuff.
I was once told I was brave for admitting I liked the Carpenters. I was like, "why, am I in danger?"

The thing at my high school was belt as loud as you can. Who wants to ruin their voice by trying to see how loud they can "scream" a note!
Yea, seriously. Especially since, very few people can belt without sounding like they're just yelling. People would sound way better if they just sang.

I hate it when people make a big deal about all the music I'm into...especially people at school.I hate rap and r&b and that's all my school plays. Nothing classic that I'd like to hear. Today's artists don't have the voice training, and they lip synch and rarely their songs come from them.Karen's voice is rare, and no one could sing like she could. Not even today's artists.

Being 16, I know I am in the minority for my age group for liking the Carpenters, and I'm ok with that. Karen is by far my favorite singer. Always has been, always will be. That said, I also know she's not the only singer in the world, and I do like many other singers. Among my favorite modern singers are Natasha Bedingfield, Neko Case and Lasgo.
I often get ribbed by people who aren't fond of the Carpenters, but I don't mind. People have their own opinions, and they are certainly entitled to them. If they disagree with mine, I don't get mad over it.

My my my, I cant believe your sister said Karen Carpenter can not sing.
I bet you had a hard time with keeping your cool.
I have had several times where I defended the Carpenters. People these days just do not seem to understand their music and talent. To this day I have never EVER heard anyone sing anywhere close to the way Karen sings. Her voice is like and Angel and gives you (at least myself) a warm smile and sometimes a heavy heart as you hear the pain in her voice and realize that such a talent like hers is so hard to come by and that her voice will never again grace another song.
Her voice can lift you up when you are down and calm your nerves when you are tense. I wish kids these days were more receptive to classics as classics are timeless.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. Today's artists have voice training and Karen didn't, and she so much better.
Says something right there, doesn't it?

A girl today saw my binder, and [from what I overheard, I was getting calc help] pointed to my Carpenters picture and said, "They rock. My mom used to listen to them."
I couldn't help but smile inside.

i am very passionate about the carpenters, i'm just a new fan (been a fan since last year in june) but it's a sad story about karen, and her voice was just out of this world, it was so peaceful and beautiful, when i have kids and they're babies they're going to listen to the sweet sounds of "masquerade" and "they long to be" even when the carpenters were out ppl bashed them because of their sweet melodic sounds, and everyone i've met loves the carpenters (well most of them are in their 40-60s so that might explain why the like them). ppl that have the soft voices like norah jones, she has that mellow sound to her, but it's not beautiful and easy like karen's it's just....God gave her voice, He put all of His work, and energy and angelic sounds into Karen, and i think that's why we haven't heard another voice like hers, because God broke the mold when He created Karen, it's like an angel was in her singing those beautiful but yet sad love songs.

You know, I think there's a shift in the music culture (perhaps starting with the Carpenters tribute album "If I were a Carpenter) that has finally begun to appreciate the music and not the goody-four-shoes image. And I believe (feel free to disagree) that the resurgence of fans and the genuine appreciation for the voice and the arrangements would have happened regardless of Karen's passing or not. I mean, by now they would have been in the business nearly four decades. You can't ignore talent for that long.
But personally, once I became a stay at home mum, I started appreciating my own identity as opposed to the expectations that were placed on me (first as a student, then as a professional career woman)... When I became a mum, I discovered that I don't give a
what anyone thinks of the music that I listen to (or how I live my life in general). I have appreciation for music of all genres, so I really don't care if people think I'm crazy for loving the Carpenters' music. Even certain heavy metal rock stars have acknowledged the talent that they had. So IMO it comes down to the ability to separate yourself from the TRENDS and the media perception, and just simply listen with open ears. And then having enough enthusiasm to actually do something about it....
