Richard's Early 1960's Record?

Walkinat9's Photo Walkinat9 02 Sep 2003

Hi all,

I already posted this on the A&M Corner Messageboard, but perhaps you guys here can help me? I recently listened to an outtake of a BBC radio interview with Richard in which he mentions recording a couple of tunes with a local group in New York in 1963 or perhaps even late 1962.

The titles he mentioned are "Write me a letter" (with a Jerry Lee Lewis like piano gliss by Richard) and "Mary Anne" (spelling??). Apparently this record even received local airplay back then, which Richard thought was a fabulous feeling, hearing himself on the radio for the first time. Does anybody know the name of the group and the record company or label it was recorded for??

Thanks!!

Hi Greg,

When I read your post on A&MCorner I serched and asked Carpenters fan in Japan, but could not find it (even on ASCAP site).

But we talked about "Karen & Richard sang background on Jan & Dean's song" on the topic of "Karen On Drums".

Greg,

Have you seen "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" on
RollingStoneMagazine?
http://www.rollingstone.com/features/cover...en.asp?pid=1917

Why is Les Paul at 46?
Would you post short review of your Les Paul concert?

Richard said:
I was hooked on the overdub sound of Les Paul and Mary Ford back in 1951. I
had no idea how they did it, I just knew that was a whole bunch of Mary
Fords, I knew it! You could tell! And I remember asking my mother, "How does
she do it?" I mean, I was six years old, I didn't know about overdubbing!
[Laughs] And of course my mother didn't know! So she said, "She just works
at it. You have to work at it!"

Scroll down, please.

I have not read this article. This is written by Tatsuro Yamashita whose
wife (they say that) sang "Now" before Karen sang it.

Thanks Sakura! Just a few more days and I'm off to NYC!! And thanks for the links as well. Interesting lists about those guitar players and rellated lists. I don't know why Les Paul didn't make a higher ranking, the man's a genius!! BTW, that's a wonderful quote from Richard about Mary Ford's overdubbed vocals

Anyway, I'll be looking for this Jan & Dean recording too and try to listen very carefully if Karen & Richard can be heard...

I just wish someone knew about this early record in which Richard can be heard on the piano, because this probably means that it has to be the very first disc with one of the Carpenters on it, right??

You are welcome, Greg. I'm glad to know that you went to the links.

You are right. If you find anything new about the record, share it with us,
please. If you have time after coming back to your country, would you talk
about the outtake of a BBC radio interview with Richard?

I got "Save for a Rainy Day" CD which includes "Like A Summer Rain". You can
hear back-up vocals on the CD. To tell the truth, I'm very sorry but I don't
know the voices of back chorus are Karen's & Richard's or not. If you get
the CD or LP, please tell us your opinion.
I bought the CD at amazon.jp. Mine is made in Canada(SC 11035) and "Like A
Summer Rain" is the original J&D mono version. The CD have songs in stereo
and mono. "Like...." is mono version only. I went to amazon.uk website and
found the LP(2LP) there, and CD on the amazon(US).

Have a good time!

Do you think "Why Don't You Write Me" is the same song as "Write me a letter" that Greg talked about?

Checked Ray Coleman Biography : see Page 44

Richard Plus Schoolfriend Jim Squeglia Recorded with New Haven Vocal Group , The Barries in New York.Richard was Just 16 :D

Coleman Refers to Richard with Jerry Lee Lewis Piano Flourish ;)

Artist : The Barries

Single Title : Write Me A Letter

Label : Josie Records

Would Really Like to Hear this Very Early Work with Richard's Keyboard Sound and Vocal Group Harmonies

Believe the Barries Recorded for Several Record Labels 1960> Mid 1960's Until Their Sound Became Unfashionable , Unlike Carpenters Timeless Vocals & Harmonies :D
