True Story......

ok i just had to share this story with you cause...well, i'm excited. so many of you know that my mom and her siblings grew up in the 70's, and i'm always snooping around my grandmother's basement for new 70's treasures from things my aunts/uncles/mom had left there. awhile back i found "bless the beasts and the children" sheet music. so i thought "ok, there's got to be a carpenters record around here somewhere", but i could never find one. so tonight i was digging through old magazines, and i found a new stack of records i've never found before. i was surprised because i thought i'd been very thorough in my previous searches......well, that turned up nothing. a bunch of soundtracks (hello dolly, my fair lady, fiddler on the roof to name a few) and a chicago record. as i put them back, i noticed some writing on the front of the chicago record. written in the "c" of "c"hicago, someone had written "!!carpenters!!" i was all "huh?", so i took the record out.....turns out to be 2 christmas records......none of the having carpenters on them. so i was like "i KNOW there's got to be a carpenters record around here somewhere!!" i searched through all the cubbards and drawers, and still nothing. after a good half hour of searching(and a few interruptions.....my uncle brad kept yelling "what the hell are you doing over there?" as he's working on farm partnership stuff. "uhhh, reading old magazines....oh look, a 'good housekeeping' from 1989....and here's a 'reader's digest' from 1975"
) so i gave up and started flipping through a few children's music records. they weren't in any packaging, and there is probably about 50 or so of them in one of the back cubbards in the corner of the basement. i quickly became bored, and decided i wanted to get brad away from partnership stuff so we could play pool, and so i returned them and stacked them on the remaining records in the cubbard........where i noticed a tan-colored album shoved at the bottom of the huge pile. considering the inside of the cubbard is tan, i'd never noticed it there before, even more surprising because i've pulled those children's records out a few times to go through them to see if i've missed a good record. i tried to get it out, but the stack of records was too heavy. so i tried to make out some wording....and i noticed "A&M" on the bottom. so i went through the painstaking process of removing the 5 million childrens albums
and low and behold, the carpenters tan album! yay! and as i opened it up.....there inside was the tan record, as well as the "close to you" record! so now i am the happy owner of 2 carpenters records, even though i am missing the close to you cover. oh well. so since i'm so happy because i've never owned a carpenters record, i'll share something with you....here's a pic of me with my new record!

ok, i know this sounds like i have basically no life....but i am really excited, and i had to share, ok?
and yes, i am currently listening to them.....i've also never heard the carpenters songs unremastered before....i love it.

Wow, that's an awesome story, Jamie!!
I wish I could find Carpenters stuff in my mom's old record collection, but apparently she was one of those "hip" people in the 70s.
What a great find! And I love the shirt

yeah, my mom was a dork when it came to music. she actually has all her records here in our house, so that carpenters record is not hers...at least she doesn't think so.

That is a cool find, Jamie! Its fun to scavenger through old collections and finding the special item! Congratulations!
Will you be able to play it on a record player? And did you say it was at the bottom of a stack of records that could have been heavy? If so, I'm hoping the record itself isn't warped as LP's need to be stored upright.

yeah, i played both of them, both sides, last night. and they both played very well, the only one i had trouble with was "i kept on loving you" it skipped a few times, but that was all. i had no idea about stacking the records. yes, it was under a heavy stack of records, but it seems to play just fine. thanks for the info, leanne
