Promoting The Carpenters

Area51's Photo Area51 01 Sep 2006

HI
I think if the music of the carpenters should be promoted even more if their legacy is to survive ,for new generations of people are to discover their music, also prehaps if one of their songs were used in a movie or even a more accurate and updated version of the karen carpenter movie was to be made, althoug richard would probably disagree. Also a new book biography would be nice as well.

Two words... Keep dreaming. Well, as long as Richard's alive and holds the copyrights to everything Carpenter related.

Is this really true?? whistling.gif I'm not wishing ill on the man...but if he really got hit by a bus tomorrow...do then all his rights pass onto the record company?? Do you think we'd have a better chance of getting material released from Richard or a record company?? blink.gif

I thought I read somewhere that "I Need to Be In Love" became a hit in 1996 after being used in a film. hmmm.gif

And the same thing happened with TOTW?

But didn't that happen in Japan? The Carpenters are sound-tracked a lot over there. laugh.gif clap.gif

Yes, Linda is right.
"Top of the World" was B side.

Carpenters songs are used on TV dramas and other programs in Japan.

Here is Richard's song note on official site and CD linernotes.

I NEED TO BE IN LOVE
Music and Lyrics by Richard Carpenter, John Bettis and Albert Hammond
Bettis, Hammond, and I wrote this ballad in 1976, and it quickly became Karen’s favorite of all the songs she and I had recorded, partly because of its melodic sweep, and partly because of the lyric, which resonated with the way she was feeling at that time. To be frank, I always felt the song, performance, and arrangement were strong and commercial, and was a bit perplexed when, in the U.S., it peaked only at #25. It turned out that, regarding this record, I was right; nineteen years later the very same recording was used in a Japanese mini-series named Misenen, and re-released as a CD single. It became one of the biggest sellers of 1995, ultimately going quadruple platinum. In more ways than one, Karen would have loved that!

(Richard mentioned 'Miseinen' but Beckey or someone mistyped as 'Misenen')

At the interview in middle '90s Richard said that "Only Yesterday" from England sold nealy 3 million.

In Japan compilation CD which contained "I Need To Be In Love" sold over 3 million, and 2 kinds of CD sets for celebration of success. One of it was 100 thousand limited release and is already sold out.

Last year compilation from England got right promotion and charted 4.

In the U.S. "An Old-Fashioned Christmas" or "as time goes by" was not promoted.

How many LeadSister members in the U.S. buy "as time goes by" American release?

I'd like young fans in the U.S. went to Universal Music and promote Carpenters!!

Gold 35th anniversary was promoted and was at Billboard chart and Billboard article. clap.gif

Carpenters music are used on movies. Richard has not given permission to every movie. Do you feel good if Carpenters song is used for make fun of them?

Richard would not release songs which Karen wouldn't think to be released.

After lots of Japanese young fans bought Carpenters CD's and asked A&M in Japan about Carpenters, Karen's solo was released.

As I always say, compilation CD's are CD company plans as we know from interview with Richard. Send requests to A&M in your country. Check address of A&M at your CD's.

I lately knew that A&M in Japan think requests are from die hard fans, so CD's from request won't sell. We should ask Carpenters DVD and CD at real shops and make shop owners to ask A&M to release new DVD's and CD's.

As for DVD, Richard nor A&M don't like working for music rights. Let R2 Entertainment release Carpenters TV Specials!! They released "This is Your Life", "Bob Hope Special".

Have they or another company included talk of Carpenters scene? I wish I could watch Carpenters on Bob Hope Special.

I think that's really up to Richard to decide/figure out, and I'm sure he's thought about it often. I mean, he's not really in the media at all anymore, so maybe he just wants his and Karen's legacy to take its own course, so to speak.

I don't think it's up to fans to promote the Carpenters at all, because even the fact that we are fans is a subjective process. We're fans not just because they're talented ( a lot of people are talented ), but because they speak to us in some way. And to other people, they don't, because they're attracted to different things. So I think things should just take their course. If Richard wants to release stuff in the future, great, and if he doesn't and wants to just drop off the map so to speak, that's fine too. It's his stuff, after all. We'll survive whether MYOKOM is ever released or not. laugh.gif Personally, I really think it should be up to Richard.

I think the fan promotion is just a natural response to the kickin' music. I have recruited new fans as well as reminded original fans of their talent. And I've shared music and videos with people that I know would appreciate it. So that's as far as my promotion goes. If they like it... great. And if they end up a fan *Boo*cough*Boo* then, even better.... clap.gif

But in my world that isn't limited to the Carpenters. It's a natural outgrowth of all the music I love (which is quite a catalogue). Some people are touched by music and others are not. It's an individual thing.

I'm a bit miffed about the cancellation of the Palladium DVD and can only imagine it's a quality issue.

Richard owns the rights to his publishing and upon his demise they should pass to his children. I can't envisage any scenario whereby they would revert to the recording company. It's his (and Karen's) legacy to his children, their children, their children and so on...

I always wondered why the Carpenters do so much better in Japan and England than in the US??? hmmm.gif hmmm.gif
Richard doesn't seem interesting in any kind of re-surgence of their music......or in any promotion of himself and the music...not touring a little for specials....the new fan base is totally untapped, well....not totally, but I find it interesting non-the-less.
