Ok, is it just my computer or has the bold, italic, underline and strikethrough buttons changed? 
Now you have to c&p your text and put it into this box (kinda like the link box when you're posting a link). You can't simply highlight text and characterize it automatically. Someone's trying to complicate our lives.

is it just your computer? I'm able to highlight the text to make changes. Sounds like the guided option (or whatever its called) is enabled. My Controls--> Options--> Board Settings--> Posting Settings
Type of text editor to use when posting
Rich Text Editor requires either IE6, Mozilla or Firefox
Text Rich or Standard options
Try changing options there and see what happens.
