Karen On Drums

JohnnyAngel's Photo JohnnyAngel 12 Aug 2003

Hey nice people:

I'm downloading from WinMx some of the Carpenters' specials. Now I have incomplete files, anyway the thing is I'd watched the portion of the file I have of the 1rst TV special, the part that Karen played her drum solo, that was a few minutes ago. How can I explain this to you people: The happiness reflected on Karen's face is sublime, i'd never noticed how happy she was when she played her drums, almost bring tears of emotion in my eyes, 'cause I've rarely seen her with that sparkle in her eyes, my God! she was really beautiful!!! specially when she was happy.
I miss her terribly!!!!!!!

There is a haunting quality that Karen has that I have NEVER seen in any other singer. Her voice just pulls you in and never lets go. :P

I swear! That is why some people consider the Carpenters to be hokey or sappy. They cannot take the emotion the music pulls from you.

And that is okay. Let them listen to ACDC or whatever. :D

I listen to karen almost everyday.

In my wedding, we had "Baby I Believe You," and "For All We Know" as part of the ceremony. We had people in tears. (We also used the music from "Somewhere in Time")

You know how sometimes pop stations overplay songs. Well, trust me. In 1970 when I was 13, they overplayed 'Close to You', but no one cared because you wanted to hear it over and over.

I still want to hear it. can someone sing it to me?

Jorge,

Yes, I agree with you completely. My favorite picture of Karen is when you first log in to "Leadsister" and the picture of her in the catcher's mask playing ball is priceless. She was definitely happiest playing her drums and playing baseball. Her smile is radiant and her eyes just sparkle!

Hey JohnnyAngel, She was just AWESOME at the drums!!! I personally feel she always thought of herself as a drummer that could sing. Her traquility when playing the drums is indescribable :) and it was def. a soure of accomplishment and pride when others looked past her (especially in high school!!) Man, she probably blew the socks off of everyone when she played those drums! No one expected it from her of all people.
As for a wedding aspect, I can't imagine mine without "I Believe you" and "Because we are in love". It would make everythink perfect!!! Just like her....

She was so at home playing the drums! Her career in singing began with them. I think she felt most comfortable behind them. In every picture I've seen with Karen playing the drums, not once did she look sad or mad. She was either happy or so into the music. And that's what makes her Karen.

Once you had dowloaded it you must install it. It's very easy. the onlything that this coult take years to finish your downloads but there are such material in there.
It worth the effort to wait.

Phlipper--
....."they cannot take the emotion the music pulls from you".....I love your insight into why some people may not be able to fathom the Carpenters.....

Dear Jayne:
I tottaly agree with you!!!
Her performance is wonderful.
By the way, I invite you to listen "Now & Then" album. She played the drums in aal tracks except "Jambalaya", please, listen very carefully at "Yesterday once More" and "This Masquerade";pay special attention to the drums; her performance is simply exquisite in those tracks; in spite of the songs are ballads. Once I had a friend who was a drummer and he told me that she was a very good drummer 'cause she played as a jazz musician.

By the way I have a trivia question:

On those days she used to say someyhig about her as an artist, What dis she used to say??

Clue: It's related to "walk softly..."

Jorge,

I think I know your trivia answer. There is an expression "Walk softly and carry a big stick" - I'm trying to remember the exact quote. I just read it in a tour program I got from ebay. Let me think and I'll get back to you later on that one.

I will list to the "Now & Then" CD Jorge. I haven't listened to it in awhile, but I knew she played drums on all but Jambalaya. And I agree with your friend, Karen was good because she was a jazz muscian - you can really tell that from her playing. Especially when I heard "Another Song" - I could really tell the jazz influence in her playing. I just love those early albums when she played drums on most of the tracks. She was great!!!

Jorge

If this is the quote you're thinking of it goes "Walk softly and carry a big stick. Sing softly and carry a big sound". Is that the one you meant? It was quoted in a couple of their tour programs.
