Since I Heard Her Voice

I wrote the following in January 1989, after watching "The Karen Carpenter Story" for the first time. Some of you may have read it when it was on my former website, but for those who haven't...
Since I Heard Her Voice
It seems like only yesterday,
That the radio started to play
The songs that I have grown to love so well.
Her voice was soft and clear,
It was as if she were near.
But now she's gone, she's bid this world goodbye.
Now sometimes when I hear those songs I cry.
She is with the angels now,
Singing praise to God, and how
He must dearly love her sweet voice that He made.
Although I miss her more each day,
As I continue on my way,
I take comfort in the peace she's found.
No more to her earthly struggles bound.
She sang many songs that have touched my life,
Somehow her singing always eased my pain.
Since I heard her voice all those years ago,
My life has never been the same,
And my love for her I must proclaim.
On records she lives on,
Almost like she'd never gone.
She has given me a gift I can't repay.
No matter how far I may roam,
Her voice will be heard in my home.
From my life she will never part.
Karen will live forever in my heart.
- In loving memory of Karen Anne Carpenter (1950 - 1983)
*I sent the original handwritten copy of this poem to Richard Carpenter, who put it in his "Beloved Karen Memory Book" (that's how Ev Wallace described it to me). I encourage anyone who has written a poem to send it to Richard, as I'm sure it would mean a lot to him.

Dear Murray,
What a beautiful beautiful poem. I am sure that Karen received it with her magnetic smile. I am so happy that people post things that inspired them about Karen, rather than bring up controversial things that don't mean as much. I too LOVED Karen's voice. Someone posted a topic on this board somewhere asking the public if they felt that Karen secretly envied Olivia Newton John's voice. I think it's sad someone would even bring that up over someone whose angelic voice touched so many lives. I could never see Karen Carpenter with that sweet, mellow and highly unique voice, as envious of anybody. I was a fan of Karen's and Olivia's also and I would never EVER have thought of believing that they, two good friends, would ever compete against each other. It would be hard choosing between Oliva's voice and Karen's voice first of all because it would be like comparing apples to oranges. They both had different styles and different voices and I equally loved both of them. However, when it came to someone consoling me on a rainy day or a Monday, or when it came to me being broken hearted by some lost love, Karen was the one who was my best friend. It was what I heard in her voice. I could hear my heart crying out when I heard Karen sing her beautiful songs. It was as if though her voice was my heart speaking and as if though all at the same time, she was a friend who confided to me that she was feeling what I was feeling. She spoke to all of us in the same way and paradoxically in different ways. So while I loved Olivia's voice, Karen's was the one that did console me the most, but not because I chose her over Olivia, but because my heart felt that Karen's was the voice who put the bandaid on it, with her beautiful voice and her songs. Right now, I know Karen is in heaven loving the fact that her name is still being discussed and that people like Murray are writing beautiful heart rendering poems to Karen that inspire all of us. The first time I heard Karen Carpenter sing, I was just 16 years old. I was sitting outside at my porch at 9:00 p.m. one night with a little transister radio that my high school sweetheart (who had just joined the Navy) had given me as a goodbye gift. I was pretty sad about all of this and then I heard this magical voice sing..."When I was young I'd listen to the radio, waitin for my favorite songs..." and I knew that I had found a great friend, at least in the airwaves. God bless you Murray!!! Keep writing those beautiful poems. And Murray, I am not Karen, but I am an actress and I also sing professionally and when I sing one or two of Karen's songs, I feel as though I'm keeping her memory alive. I am inspired to sing her songs as a tribute to her memory. I want to share this with you. Enjoy it Murray and all who like it. http://www.carmenfamoros.com/We_ve_Only_Just_Begun_17B.mp3.

Thank you for the kind words Carmen, and thank you for the song. Your voice is lovely!
I visited your website, and was pleased to find that you had recorded "We Can Be Kind"... I love Nancy LaMott's voice, and this is my favorite of all her songs. Like the original, your performance brought tears to my eyes.
