Bandwidth Theft....

LeadSister's Photo LeadSister 09 Dec 2005

Please, if anyone see's that people are linking to images on LeadSister.com... let me know! It's bandwidth theft and cost people their sites sometimes. Leadsister is very high traffic and I use alot of bandwidth to begin with... so please do not hotlink to pictures on LeadSister.

I have disabled the ability to hotlink to images b/c I have found people using my images on their sites.

Also, if you ever want to share an image you found online, please upload it to your site or one of the free image hosting sites instead of linking directly to theirs. You would be amazed how much bandwidth has been stolen from me.

Thanks so much :)

Pam thanks for explaining that. I never thought when I post a pic from somewhere else like that huge Carpenters photo page of the old Barry Biliki's Carpenters photos that it is really hotlinking and taking bandwith from that website.

So then we should not post pics on this board and use the url from another website owner right? We need to upload the photo to a free site and then use the freesite url to post the photo here. Does that go for places like Amazon and stores like that? Sorry I may have been one that posted a url from another site with photo of Karen and placed their url here. This is good information to know, especially if you never had a website before, you may not have known this.

Hmm well yeah, but that is one of the advantages and .... yeah... disadvantages from browseing on the net, all together it is one BIG link :o

Indeed there are some tricks to prevent people hot linking to a site, but how it works ??.... i'm not too familiar with that. Most of the time there is a database lying under the website, so the sites your watching are dynamically generated. Like the pages we all watching here on the forum :o

I've seen some websites where it is almost impossible to link to. You can watch the pictures only through a frame from the official site. I think there must be some java programming in there to accomplish that. :P

I'm guilty of hotlinking from time to time too. If I come across something and too lazy to go through uploading it to my server or whatever. So dont feel I'm pointing fingers at anyone. For the most part, I like to try and not hotlink. You can post pictures here... just try and upload to a free host. Or if you do link to someones website... then sometimes after everyone has seen the photo.. I go and unlink it or send them to the site. I just dont want to kill other sites bandwidth.

I have hotlink protection on my server. I had to disable it b/c someone was having trouble viewing the forum for some weird reason. But I had to re-enable it b/c I found people linking to my photos.

Yeah' Pam, as far as hot linking images from other sites, I've noticed this too as a right mouse click-properties check on a picture quickly shows an image's source url. And yeah', we're all guilty of this from time to time anyway.

Yes Pam! No No to the Bandwidth stealers  I remember having my own little site at one time and this was a big problem as well! I always use photobucket for linking any pics.

Photobucket is a good place to store and upload photos. I also have my own file sharing space.

Nice Christmas hat on Karen Matt. Did you use Photoshop to do that?

Thanks Dave! Thought I'd try to add a bit of a Christmas Flare there. I used Jasc Paint Shop Pro and a Christmas Picture Tube plug-in, which basically means I can put hats on heads with a click of a button lol.

When you reach a certain amount of posts without post padding.....you will be able to change it. I dont advertise this b/c when people find out... they start padding posts.

That's when you post and post and post even though you have nothing to say, just to increase your post count. :D
