Carpenters Forever 2002 Japanese Special

KarenCarpFan's Photo KarenCarpFan 25 Apr 2005

this is in my own words here as they come to me.

This is a special telethon accessible to only the japanese fan base in Japan via NHK. This is a rare and very deep look into various carpenters telivision appearances, concert footage and promotional videos. This is a 2 hour special. It has commentary soley by richard. No other Carpenters key players are shown. The special shows Richard on Piano discussing the sucess of Close to you. towards the end he plays Together at christmas again..him singing! The special also includes an interviewer showing richards whole family.
The special starts off with the year 1968. it shows the success of appolo on teh moon. richard is seen in his ferrari driving in Los angeles with Huge Carpenters pictures on the city street. during the drive throughh he passes by teh beach and waves out his car. a hippie from the 1960s waves back!! very clever this shot was!
a few carpenters songs are being played all teh while. clips of please mr post man comes up..I need to be in love comes up while a girl is on a swing. finally his ferrari lands right in front of the newville house as teh picture from Now and Then comes up.
Richard Carpenter introduces himself. He mentions that in 1963 his family moved to Los Angeles from New Haven Connecticut. on the way in town they stop a man named Nip. richard Goes on to say.. My Mom, introduces her children and says they just moved into town and were asking for directions. she introduces her song as a piano player..Nip mentions with interest that every sunday Furman park has a little talent show. and if he was interested he coulc come out and play. at this time karen has been singing "the end of the world. Richard goes on to say that karen didnt want to sing it at all. he goes on to say he performs Theme from Exxodus.
Richard is later shown on the piano. Richard mentions that herb albert really wanted him to record close to you. he said he was aganist it cause it was so soft. he said 'Herb its either going to number one or be the biggest stiff of teh year. its not going to hang around like ticket to ride at number 54. Its one or the other."
Richard explains that he added his own arrangement to what the lyrics and chord changes were given to him.
More music videos are shown. Ticket to ride is shown, we've only just begun from teh gold DVD were shown. then it shows live at the BBC. karen is at the drums. they perform teh bacharach, david medley, love is surrender,Help, and of course the splendid "and when he smiles" just before they wrap it up..karen goe son to say "all this began for us about a year ago with the record "Close to you" and from that time,we have had the best year that anyone could ever ask for. But there is just one thing thats kinda hard for us to explain and thats how much it means from two kids from Downey California to share our music with audiences from all over teh world. I can only hope you are all very happy and we have done the same for you. Thank you very very much"
Richard is then interviewed as saying karen was more interested in drumming. he goes on to say tat this posed a problem. Karen really enjoyed the tunable tom toms. and you could see just from karens upper face from the stage. he knew this was going to be a problem and comfronted karen about it in the summer of 1971.
richard says "she considered herself a drummer who sang" Phil collins says teh same thing, i may be wrong about that. But she considered herself a drummer to sang. As Lovely a singer as she was! after this various concert videos are shown. sometimes is shown as karen seems to be almost in high emotion.
The rare I need to be in love promotional video is shown. and the new london theater show was shown along with the best version of I need to be in lovethat i ever heard! the live recording, just her voice and piano.
Also in this special an interviewer asks whats coming next? and will you be continung making music for the rest of your life? he stumbles a bit and says "yeah, on and off. Im semi retired and will make teh music when I will want to make it. To me its better that way instead of having to. I will say that i feel we were touring too much. I feel i could have done a better job than even i did. thats what i feel." teh interview than asks whats coming next? he said working on our christmas album for this following christmas. tehre will be some guests vocalists written by me and pamela phillips Oland on some as well. the scene than goes to show Richard on teh piano performing teh song. Its rather simple song and quite short.
next the interviewer asks what do you feel is your best arrangement. he said oh theres a lot. well theres this new one. But i will have to say, Yesterday once more" he is then shown on the piano performing the song. It sounds just like the song off teh PACC solo album.
richard then introduces his family. taylor the youngest starts to interrupt, and richard says wait one minute we will get with you soon. he begins with Traci and shes 14. ends with an I. then he goes to Mindi. Mindi is nine also ends with an I. This is my wife Mary ends with a Y! and this is my son, our son collin and hes 9. then the interviewer goes to ask what tehy will wanna be when they grow up. Traci says she has no idea. Mindi goes to say i dont want to be a singer? richard asks why. she said cause i want to be an actor. I mean actress. richard says oh thats fine. richard asks collin what do you want to be? do you want to be the next perry commo? he nodds his head. then they show Taylor..he says you want to be a singer..she looks like karen. and he chuckles as taylor smiles and nodds. the special is all wrapped up and ends with the audio song "sing" it shows pictures of karen and richard as teenagers..and fades out.
This is the best documentry avalible for music videos. we are accessed to some very rare material footage. while nothing new from richard commenary wise we are blessed with his showing the sony recorder and talking about how they started using it. and of course we get to see him performing together at christmas again, which is a real treat since the album isnt even released! so remember expect more music videos.. but again some rare glimples of richards life Now.

Thanks! Michael

Just post a few more messages and wait, Mikey or Matt surely will help you.

"Carpenters Forever" is Japanese TV Special. It was first aired in 2002, and repeated several times. Last one was aired March of last year.

I can't say I send it to you, because I read that a Japanese fan, who sent many VHS copies to fans in the U.S. was told not to send it to the U.S. by Richard's manager or someone.
Richard knows LeadSister.com.

Hi "Only Yesterday", welcome to Leadsister. biggrin.gif I believe the members section may now only be available to members who have over 50 posts.

The best thing is to check with Pam (Leadsister) the administrator to find out the current rules as I haven't been on the boards for a while.

I hope this helps. I note that you come from Downey. Is this true??? I usually visit once a year during March.

Hope to see you around.

Mikey.
