I,ve just read a couple of the new member intros and find it wonderful that they are so young. It really does go to show that Karens voice is timeless, and that the carpenters are as relevant today as they have ever been. She may be gone, but i think this proves that her legacy will never be forgotton. What are your thoughts on this? Am i just being sentimental?

Well I'm a High School Senior and I first really got into the Carpetners back in 8th grade. I listened to my mom's 45 of "Superstar" and then I had to get some kind of grestest hits thing, and I did! That was about $500 dollars ago. (Probably more than that!
)
I guess I'm a really "hardcore" fan, but what can I say except that I love the Carpenters!!!

Go ahead, be sentimental.
The Legacy lives on for The Voice.

I think there will always be people born with a good ear for voices and thanks to the recording technology, Karen's voice is preserved for these future fans. Young people will hear and know what's good. I'm "old" now, but I was 14 when I discovered "The Voice" and it's stuck with me while other teenage favorites have faded and my sister has liked Karen since at least 12 or 13, so I'm sure that voice will have a timeless appeal to all ages.

I'm 18 and I've been a fan for around 4 years now. But I've always been a bit of a retro child- since the age of 5 I was obsessed with ABBA and even then that was a good 10 years after they'd stopped recording.
Me and my parents have entirely different tastes in music, so I can't say I came upon them whilst digging through their LPs. And as the Carpenters are still viewed as very daggy (here in Oz at least) it's not easy to come across any of their albums. Even "Classic Hits" radio stations don't play their music. As one of my co-workers said the other day "The Carpenters?! That's scraping the bottom of the barrel don't ya think?" He has crap taste in music anyway.
Bizarrely, I came upon them one lazy Saturday going through the TV channels trying to find something to watch and "The Karen Carpenter Story" came on. Found the movie to be extremely tacky, but elements of it oddly mezmerising- And I'd never heard anything quite like her voice. Didn't take me long to catch on.
I still listen and buy music from current artists, but I find that vocally, everything is overdone. They don't hold notes- either because they're a crap vocalist or becuase they think vocal gymnastics are the cool thing to do. Karen's voice was unique but she sang purely and simply and evocatively. And coupled with Richard's arrangements their sound will always be timeless. With music the way it is at the moment I think people are begining to yearn for classics such as the Carpenters.

well we the youngin's have to compliment our parents into getting us interested..i just turned 22 february 16. I remember being in a wal mart and wanting a CD. my mother is with me..i am by this time 15 years old. i wanted a doobie brothers cd. I never was interested in modern music..I loved the old love songs from the 1970s and 1980s..and i was a huge fan in the 1960s oldies. my mother picks up the carpenters 69-73 singles album. i said mom, the 1970s? this isnt oldies..she said it kinda was..she said if i didnt like it she could have it. anyways needless to say i kept the cd, though i must say i honestly wasnt in love with it first listen.
now my mom dosnt like the carpenters. But really it is our parents that get us into the music. in the 1970s, and i have read in an article somewhere, the carpenters were the music your parents rather you listen to. as i refrence to a teenager who would rather have a beatles or a zappa record in his or her collection.
as Time goes by, one learns to appreciate the pure beauty and the craftsmanship that an artist puts into their work. The Carpenters certentely were not an exception. They strived for excellance and perfection. So even 36 years later, Nothing can compare! and one worries far less what is popular, and what just makes your heart skip a beat and a voice to fall in love with, is top priority!

Michael that was interesting to read. I guess part of the "goofus" in me was that although I was a young teen, my parents had almost nothing to do with me discovering I liked Karen's voice. It just stood out to me on its own on a mix Xmas tape one year. However.......... although my parents never said "We're so relieved you like the Carpenters rather then the rubbish out right now.", they silently advocated it.
For that Christmas I got a tape of "Close To You".... so they "fed" my interest, let's say that? What I do know is I likely made my own little sister a convert... she couldn't get away from my influence and now at 17, she loves to sing with Karen and even sings their songs at her own voice recitals. So the young generation keeps passing it on!

I was introduced to the Carpenters music through Linda!
Actually, Linda told me about Karen's story before she actually put any of their music on for me. So really, I feel in love with Karen as a person before "The Voice".
I am 19 years old and I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a Carpenters fan
, even though none of the people I hang out with really know who they are
