I've been looking at diffrent CD's to buy (I always save up and buy a bunch at the same time) and I rembered Richard talking about Russell's Carney album, and that is the album where "Masquarde" is own. I was wondering does anyone own any of his albums. I know there diffrent from KC & Rc's versions, but I don't want to buy something I want like, I mean you guys caused me to give ONJ a chance and since then I've been hooked.
Also how are Russell's version of "A Song For You" and "This Masquarde" diffrent from Carpenters?
What about Coolidge's version of "Superstar" from what I've heard it's better than Karen's reading, but I find that hard to believe

From what I've heard of clips online, This Masquerade sounds a bit different from the Carpenters, almost seems like a different structure. However A Song For you sounds similar to the C's by melody and all, but Karen really makes the song their own and shine with her voice and charm

Rita Coolidge does a great version of SUPERSTAR. And this is the version that Karen would have heard first, before she recorded hers, with the lyrics written on a napkin. The album MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN that Rita's version of SUPERSTAR was on, was a best selling album. I always feel that Rita and Karen had similar voices in some aspects. Rita's voice, although beautiful, is a bit more rougher than Karen's...and in terms of voices...seems like the older cousin, whereas Karen, had a more crystalline, creamy voice, and was the younger sister(to Rita as an older "Cousin")...Rita's take on the song, is one, who seems to have experienced love several times, while Karen's version, you think she has experienced her first form of love, and has her heart broken for the first time...by this Rock star...
I have always loved and admired Rita Coolidge. She is a beautiful singer in her own right. ALL TIME HIGH, YOUR LOVE HAS LIFTED ME HIGHER, LOVE CAME FOR ME, WE'RE ALL ALONE, YOU...and many other songs she does, are truly wonderful.
I always wonder what Karen and Rita thought of each other. I know that Rita sang at the GALA event of the opening of the RICHARD AND KAREN CARPENTER PERFORMANCE CENTRE, back in fall of 1994.
My thoughts,
Cameron

Cam, I love Rita Coolidge's voice. It's very clear and warm. I especially love "We're All Alone. I think Karen would definately have admired her.

Speaking of singers who have recorded Carpenters songs ~ Michael Buble has recorded Song For You on his latest album
Have to say I don't like it nearly as much as KC's version. It's definately lacking something but I don't know what...

I was a fan of Rita Coolidge at the same time as Karen and in many ways Rita's voice has similarities, if maybe a bit rougher.
Ellie I'm pleased to hear Michael Buble has recorded a version of "Song for You", I'll have to get it.
Michael is one of the few people who can pull off that swing sound successfully,
so it is no suprise that he appreciates a good voice and good music in all it's forms, unlike many of these Karaoke pretenders such as Westlife.
We can ALL do that.
