The Number 2.

Christian's Photo Christian 19 May 2004

I have thought about this for so long now. Have you noticed how often the Carpenters were no.2? It is really weird I think.

Here are some examples;

All the singles and albums that peaked at No.2 on the charts.
(5 singles, 3 albums)

The musical act in the 70`s with the second most gold singles in the US (Elton John and Bee Gees were No.1)

The Karen Carpenter Story was the second most watched TV movie of the year.
(I know my first name is Stephen was No.1)

In the Book of No.2 singles, the Carpenters are the No.2 artists with the most No. 2 singles. (Elvis is No.1)

The Carpenters are the second biggest selling act on A&M records (Police is No.1)

Sakura also added some from Japan under the Rainbow Connection topic.

A duo at #2. Seems cosmic! OR a conspiracy. Charting is not a science and biases can play out. The Carpenters were not hip or cool and even I, used to buy their records and not tell my friends. Sales tell the real story and the longevity of those sales.

Oh, I remember one more. Carpenters are the no.2 best selling duo of all times. Simon&Garfunkel are No.1.

And Aaron, think I joined first. Anyway, don`t try to compete with me, you will be in way over your head :whistle

Actually, I think Hall and Oates have been # 1 since 1984. At least that is what is advertised on the CD sticker.

this is all bazaar and true....but lets not forget those rare number ones....and had the 70s not been filled with such awesome music, all of those things that were number two....as far as albums and singles.......would have been number one....i mean come on, these days britney spears has the number one songs.....what happened to good music. people who lived in that era were lucky to have the best music of the 20th and so far the 21st century........there are the rare exception of norah jones, celine dion, whitney houston, etc. but none match karen or the other 70s artists.

I totally agree with your post, SMW...I have talks like your post with a friend of mine often. I have said that I can't imagine this generation singing songs of the 90's and 2000 years after they're made as we do of the 50's,60's,70's and yes some 80's...

What has happened to our music industry?...the creativity seems like it has a ceiling on it. Nothing new seems to be evolving. It seems this generation has been involved in rap and hip hop forever...and they're stuck. Just my opinion, and I'm not putting down that music, but it's time to move on...

Think of how music evolved and then seemed to really slow down in the 80's. Up to that point, artists kepts singing absolutely fantastic music of every mood and beat...

Thanks for the post!

One more No.2 in Japan.

"Only Yesterday" was 2nd bigget seller foreign music in 1975.
But No. 1 was "Please Mr. Postman".

What did Song4U call these No.2?

Carpenters were either lucky or very unlucky to have so many #2 singles and albums in USA in particular :bowdown

Also strangely Carpenters had two #2 singles in UK MUSIC WEEK / TOP OF THE POPS CHARTS ....very odd coincidence :bowdown (But did enjoy #1 singles in other UK charts ..... :bowdown )

Are Carpenters #2 A&M sales act to The Police ....where did all these extra Police sales come from ....Carpenters were #1 act as of Karen's demise in 1983 and have enjoyed massive sales since...Police disbanded in 1984 .....and have had a few selling compilations .....but nothing compared to Karen & Richard

Perhaps Sting's solo sales have been totalled as well

Simon & Garfunkel are the best selling USA duo .....but again worldwide .....Carpenters have outsold all other duo acts .....so it is all relative :bowdown

Indeed, it is sad that this generation will inherit little original music.

Don't get me wrong. There are some great artists around today, but they are far outweighed or diluted by the manufactured rubbish churned out by record companies just so they can make a fast buck. The long term investment doesn't seem to be there. :bowdown

One of the problems is that it is the risky option to take on something new and original, as opposed to the easy option of grabbing four kids off the street telling them how to sing and dance then churning out some catchy pop tat  which will go to number one for one week, after which you won't hear of them again.

We need some brave producers to stick their necks out and try out some grass roots talent. It must still be out there somewhere.

Speaking of the number 2, "2" is the name of Olivia Newton-John's most recent album, one of duets. I really wish it had featured Karen's voice along with hers.

How cool about Karen's birthday. I didn't realize it was the day after mine. (-:
