Just A Thought

daclint1982's Photo daclint1982 19 May 2004

Does anybody think the same as I do? ...When Karen looks vibrant and beautiful the song seems to get lost in the fame. In performances where she is less than healthy, I find myself drawn into the performance much more and on a very emotional level. Her beautiful voice shines through much more and I find myself thinking "how on earth could such a beautiful noise come from such a frail human?" It also reminds me that this legend was only mortal like the rest of us. Anybody have any thoughts on this??

I suppose so. But on songs like Rainy Days & Mondays and Yesterday Once More the pain and yearning in Karen's voice is evident even though she was not sick when these were recorded.
It is true though, Karen's suffering and death add to the appeal of her voice and the songs. They are more poignant and interesting as a result.

Maybe you are sensitive to the juxtapostion.

When she was young and healthy, reviewers would write statements to the affect of how could one so young sing with such wisdom and depth. I can see that.

Now, when she was so thin, I used to think, "How can you still sing?" So I do understand what you are saying.

I tend to disagree Karen's best vocal performances were when she was in her healthiest state. Her voice was strong and bold.
