I Can`t Smile Without You

Does anyone know why the beginning of this song was re-recorded a year or so after?
Was Karen not happy with her performance or was it done only as a novelty for the B-side of the single and Singles 74-78 album?
Personally I like the re-recorded version better, has a sort of more airy opening.

I'm not sure why the beginning of rerecorded, but I like the second version better as well. Hopefully someone else knows the answer.

If I recall Richard felt wanted to re-record Can't Smile as considered 1976 version lacked something musically and planned this as B side for future single .....eventually Calling Occupants Autumn 1977.
Can't Smile was a possible single for 1976 ....much better radio wise for Carpenters than GOOFUS ....
Added to UK Singles 1974-1978 as a rarity for fans

Ever since this topic came up, I have been listening to this song quite often. It's really a pleasant song. I have always enjoyed it, but it is nice to think about other people enjoying it as well!
