(a Place To) Hideaway

Sakura's Photo Sakura 03 May 2004

Rick posted a mail from Randy Sparks who wrote "Hideaway" to his website and shared Randy's picture. Thank you, Rick.

(When I read a topic on his website last month, viruses attacked my computer. Rick didn't intend the viruses, there are no viruses now.)

The "Carpenters" album also features "Hideaway", a beautiful song by Randy Sparks, who is best known for his group "The New Christy Minstrels" and another of his songs, "Today". Before Karen and I started out on our own, we were in the aforementioned group "Spectrum". Randy hired us (a very rare booking) to perform at his club, Ledbetters, in Westwood, California. He opened the show and "Hideaway" was one of the songs he sang. I liked it immediately and never forgot it.

Isn't there a porn star by the name of Randy Sparks? Not that I'd know! ;)

Leave it to Aaron to make that sort of connection. Well, I guess someone who list Solitaire as a song which describes him the best, would know this sort of thing ;)

I once did a picture search on google for Karen Carpenter, one result I got was a movie called Karen and the Carpenter. It was not a Disney movie :o

As for the song, I really like it and it is one of the stronger album cuts.

Randy Sparks was the founder and leader of the New Christy Minstrels, a very popular folk singing group in the early 1960s. They released their first album in 1962, my aunt and uncle had it and played it all the time. Last August I was surprised to see it (and their second album as well) had been released on CD. It sounds as good as it did when I was a youngster. The Christys' success was relatively short lived but if you ever get to hear any of their work it's well worth it.
