This may be an uncomfortable topic for some but does anyone think that Karen can be classed as a gay icon?
If you think about other gay icons such as Judy Garland, Maralyn Monroe, Dusty Springfield and Barbra Streisand they all have something in common with Karen. Judy, Maralyn and Dusty had the tragic lives and Barbra has (and Dusty had) the easy listening, often heart wrenching voice and music. All things which Karen possessed.
Any thoughts?
Paul

Every gay man I know loves Karen. (I know a lot of gay men)

In fact, if you throw on "These Good Old dreams" in a gay country bar, the floor will fill up with men two-stepping (deja vu (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) )

One time I played a song from Karen's Solo CD for this gay guy that I was in school with. I asked him to guess who it was. (I played Making Love in the Afternoon)

He said "Well it's Karen Carpenter." I said, "How could you tell?"; He said, "Sheryl, I'm a gay man."

There you have it. (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif)

Yeah, great story!
And yeah, Karen is loved by all my gay friends too, one of them even has a "Karen Carpenter listening weekend" every two weeks, never been to one, but i've heard they are great!
I remember once in New York, i was introduced to this guy, we went dancing after and when he took off his jacket, he was wearing a Carpenter's shirt... (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Stereotyping!

I am defintiely not gay and I love the Carpenters. So don't think that only gay men love Karen.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with gay people at all.

And there is nothing wrong with you being straight, Andrew. In fact, I find straight people to be quite amusing.

Oh my God Aaron, you really make me laugh with your posts! (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Of course we shouldn't stereotype. My Dad and my brother like the Carpenters and they're both straight.
I wonder if there are any Karen Carpenter drag queens! That would be amusing!
And yes, Karen's an icon to me too! (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

We never said only gay people loved Karen Carpenter... did we?
My boyfriend loves Karen Carpenter too, and he's straight ( (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif) ) he doesn't speak english, so he doesn't understand a thing, but he likes to listen to her, and look at pictures of Karen.
And i have to agree with Paul, Aaron makes me laugh too!

I remember reading an article in a magazine( a "straight" one) where it said that Karen was a gay icon. Off course she is, gay men have great taste and they love Karen.
I think gay people, and other people who have felt pain and suffering because of them being who they are, can relate to Karen as she also had great suffering and pain in her life with the anorexia etc. And with Karens music you can also feel the pain when she sings, a quality very few singers have.

But Karen is not just a gay icon, she is loved by all sorts of people. So don`t start to question your sexuality just because you sing Top Of The World in the shower (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

That made me laugh Christian! I can just imagine all straight male Carpenters fans panicking like mad. (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Don't worry, you can't stereotype Carpenters fans. Thats what is so wonderful about Karen and Richard's music. It crosses all spectrums of taste.
I definately agree with you that gay men can relate to Karen's pain and suffering. Bless her heart, she got me through some very tough times and I will always be truly greatful to her for that.

Yep Paul, their music is for everybody and that`s why it is so great!

She also got me through some hellish years, she was my rock in those troubled teens and I owe her everything. That`s also why I treasure her so much as I do, even though she is gone she is still so present, still giving people joy, happiness and comfort.
Bless her!!

I just love the Carps, and yes, I am straight! Having said that, I agree that a lot of gay men listen to and enjoy KC. There was a gay man who worked where I did and he played their music a lot at work, so I asked him about it. He thought it was strange that a straight guy would like KC. I just told him, "Well, I guess I can appreciate her in ways you can't!" lol (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:http://www.leadsister.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
