I prefer Barry's version of We've Only Just Begun. I really like his take on There's a Kind of Hush. I wish he would do an album of original songs. Although I buy them, I'm kind of tired of the cover albums. The same goes for Rod Stewart.

I love both the versions...I think Barry did a great job turning them into his own, so to speak.

Well to be honest, I don't love them, but I like them. There are very few Carpenter covers that I like as much as the originals.

Agreed.
In fact, I'm trying to think of one.

Actually the only cover that I like equally to the Carpenter, is Amy Grant's version of Merry Christmas Darling.

If were talking about songs that they recorded around the same time that's a different story.....I think Manilows version of Can't Smile Without You is much better.

Carpenters versions are their own, but sometimes another artist can do their own thing, which I think is really good, creatively.

I'm torn. I like some covers, but I think some songs just shouldn't be touched.

Agreed. Barry's are very nice, and if I didn't already have KC's voice in my head, then Barry's versions would definitely be the best.

I like many of the other covers people have done...no offense to Carpenters, but sometimes someone else comes up with a better version.

I hear ya, but like I said, some songs/acts just shouldn't be messed with.
For instance, there's this song called "Free Bird". Well, a few years ago some act that called themselves "Will to Porwer" had this idea, and ...............

With all due respect to Carpenters' fans, I find it really refreshing to hear somebody here say this.

True, but if Richard Carpenter ascribed to this theory, then half of the Carpenters' repertoire would never have seen the light of day. The Carpenters aren't the only music group who could do a good cover.
