Hi From Dismal Suffolk In The Uk!

Hi everyone!

It's great to be here at last!

I found this website a few weeks ago when I was looking around the world wide web for anything Carpenters related, Leadsister.com was pretty much top of the list.

It would be fair to say that I have been a fan of the Carpenters since I was born (1981) and I'm sure there are several others here that can say the same. My parents were and are fans of the Capenters and my mum would sing 'Close to You' to me when I was baby, so their music has always been with me. Growing up in the 80s it wasn't always cool to like the music I liked, including the Carpenters but over the years I have learned that is really, really doesn't matter what people think, at least it shouldn't, especially when it comes to my music tastes. I blame a lot of it on my parents, they are what we call 'older' parents compared to my and my older brothers friends. My parents raised me and my brother on big band music, the Rat Pack, musicals, Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole, Judy Garland and so many others of tha era not to mention so many hits from the 50s and 60s although mother says I found country music all on my own! LOL!

I am a huge country music fan especially the Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride and the one and only Dolly Parton to mention but a few...

So, favourite Carpenters song, is that something you would like to know?? Well, like many of you that is a very hard question to answer because no sooner do I mention one then I think of three others and list continues! I suppose because of the sentiment attached to it for me '(They Long to be) Close to You' would be my favourite but I love 'Now', 'A Song For You', 'Masquerade', and many, many others....

Mum and dad still have many of the vinyls I first started listening to and faaling in love with whilst I was growing up. Being of the MTV generation I bought the 'From the Top' collection across 4 CDs and it's terrific and a few other CDs, I bought my mother Karen's solo album which we do enjoy.
For this past Christmas my best friend, who is also a fan but maybe not as much as I am, bought me 40/40. I love it, so, so good and with a few tracks on it I have not heard before!

I love the Karen Carpenter story even if I do get emotional by the end, I also get a little angry, because it was such a shame and loss to the music world and Karen would be 60 this year should he have lived and I believe she would still be performing, there has not been another singer of Karen's caliber since her. In my mind no one can match her vocal talents...

Well nice to meet you all and see you all on the boards soon!!

Hi KCUK

Nice to hear your story, it's always interesting to hear how and why someone likes the music of the Carpenters and Karen's life story.

It's also nice to see another UK fan on here, I'm from Sussex.

Interesting that you posted your first message on the 4th February, was that a deliberate thing ?

Welcome to Lead Sister, I hope you enjoy your time here. smile.gif

Hi Mister H!

Do you know, I didn't even realise the date, how awful is that!

Just one of those things, or a weird sign of some sort...?!

Time to listen to my fave tracks then whilst I'm here at work, got to love iTunes and Spotify!!

I always like to believe in things happening for a reason, so maybe Karen gave you a nudge, jokingly saying "someone better goddam post on Lead Sister today!" biggrin.gif

Enjoy your itunes selection ! I'm lucky to be off work today, so can listen at leisure. I've got the solo album on at the moment smile.gif

Hi, KCUK! I'm Bill from the U.S.
It's nice meeting you!

That's interesting about "Close to You" being sung to you as a baby... perhaps as a lullaby? It never occurred to me that it could be appropriate to use for that....

Hi Bill and betossantana (took concentration to type that on a Friday! LOL!)

Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah Bill, Close to You was sang to me as a babe. Probably as a lullaby, knowing mum she just sang to me a lot, would explain my love for music!

My brother who is 5 years older also enjoys Carpenters music I think, not that he'd probably share that himself, wouldn't be seen as cool by todays standards, at least that's what he thinks! Ha!

I think I'm just an old soul when it comes to music... don't like a lot of the stuff that's out there today, too manufactured for my liking..... not to say I don't like some of it but it's not the same...
