Number 1 In Japan!

Carpenter's 40/40 "The Best Selection" reached the top spot on Oricon's Album Chart for the week of May 25th. Over 100,000 in sales since it's release in late April. An impressive accomplishment due to 26 years have elapsed since Karen's passing, very few American artists have ever reached #1 there, and that Japan is the second largest music market in the world! Richard must be elated, too bad the United States does not embrace the Carpenters as it once did.
Also of note, the release of "22 Hits of the Carpenters" in 1995 has now gone 12X Platinum in Japan and it ONLY peaked at #3 on their Album Charts. In comparison, "The Singles 1969-1973" has achieved 7X Platinum and counting. The Carpenter's Woldwide sales have now reached 150 million units, pretty exclusive territory for an act that only recorded together for 14 years. Total US sales account for around 25 million of that total which shows just how popular the Carpenters were internationally, especially in Japan and Great Britain.

Are any of us here really surprised by this?
Still, it's nice to see/read stuff like that.

The best voice of all times at number one in one of the biggest markets in the world? No, that's no surprise! That's where it belongs!
I still feel the release of this collection celebrating the 40th anniversary was the perfect chance to do what they did with "Interpretations"; I mean to include 1 unreleased song, as was with "Trying to Get The Feeling Again".

I think SINGLES 1969-1973 has sold more than 7 million in the US now...and worldwide, many many more millions...CLOSE TO YOU in the states went 5 x platinum back in 1979 by their records according to DECADE book...

What week did 40/40 reach #1 in Japan? I have been checking over the past several weeks and never saw it reach #1...

Cameron,
Actual tallies were derived from the RIAA Gold and Platinum website which is considered the most accurate of sources. It currently shows "Close To You" at 2X Platinum and "Carpenters" at 4X Platinum. I do agree these numbers may be on the conservative side and do not account for International sales, but worldwide numbers are not as measurable as US figures due to there not being one accepted source for number crunching.
In addition, the RIAA does re evaluate it's unit sales every so many years which will add to the Carpenters and all artist's numbers periodically. The figures in my post reflect album sales only, if you add the single sales to "Close To You" maybe it approaches the 5X platinum as indicated in the Decade book which I also own
Jonathan,
May 17th was the date I found for 40/40 reaching #1. You can google Yahoo Music's chart watch blog by Paul Grein for the article. It's also noted in a couple of other sites if you search for "Carpenters 40/40 #1 in Japan". Hope this helps
Go Carpenters!
Best to the both of you,
Jim
